Welcome to Southmead!

We set high standards in academic achievement, in social behaviour and in artistic and physical pursuits. We recognise that every child is different and has differing needs, and we aim to draw out the best from a child whatever their strengths. We encourage children to take responsibility for a growing amount of their own learning, within a carefully structured framework of support and guidance. To achieve the best for children at Southmead we encourage strong co-operation between home and school and make great use of learning as part of the wider community.

The school has extensive grounds, with a sports field and separate playgrounds for infants and juniors. We have close links with Braunton School and Community College, the Secondary School to which most children transfer at 11, which is on an adjacent site. The staff also work closely with other local schools in the Braunton Learning Community. There are currently 253 children on roll, in eight classes. The design of the school provides for flexible groupings, allowing children to work with teachers, teaching assistants or other helpers in the classroom, practical areas or quiet rooms. Additional provision is made for children with special educational needs, with good support from the Local Education Authority advisory service. We have a Special Needs Co-ordinator, a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) and four Special Needs Teaching Assistants, in addition to seven general Teaching Assistants. Individual and small-group support is given, for example in Literacy.

The curriculum we offer at Southmead is broad, balanced and varied, endeavouring to encourage each pupil to achieve their best at whatever level that may be. We deliver the National Curriculum and the National Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks, together with Science and Information and Communications Technology, and the six foundation subjects of History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art and Physical Education, together with Religious Education. We lay great emphasis on teaching the basic skills so essential to all learning. However, we believe firmly that education is not concerned solely with academic achievement - we aim to develop the whole child, including personal understanding, social relationships and moral awareness.
