St Christopher`s School

St. Christopher’s School is a propriatorial school owned by Mrs Jane Kenyon, The Headmistress and Mr Gregory Kenyon, the Bursar. It is a non-selective school with a Christian ethos. Admission is on completion of a Registration Form by the child’s parents or guardians.

All pupils are prepared for entrance to Secondary Education and great care is taken to ensure that their transfer to the next stage of education is as smooth and positive as possible.

We are a small, co-educational Prep School providing for children aged 3 to 11 years. St. Christopher’s was established in 1991 and moved to its present site at Staverton in 1993. The school occupies 19th Century stables and barns converted to provide a delightful setting in which to learn, surrounded by the beautiful South Hams countryside.

St Christopher’s Nursery Department provides care and education for children aged 3 to 5 years. Caring and qualified staff with a staff/child ratio of approximately 1 adult to 6 children, foster a happy and secure environment in which the foundation of your child’s educational, social and emotional needs are met and fully developed with a broad and well-balanced programme. The Desirable Learning Outcomes, the National Curriculum Standards for Nursery aged children – are used as a basic core, being extended and developed to give the children a wide and stimulating curriculum.

Our aim at St. Christopher’s is to foster a child’s natural curiosity, seeking to make interested and interesting children. We believe that those who enjoy learning will succeed academically.

Providing firm, structured foundations for Numeracy and Literacy is vital at this stage, but the teaching programme is broadly based. French is developed from its early beginnings in the Nursery.

While the teaching in Prep Reception is mainly class based with the familiar structure, the beginnings of subject teaching occur in Prep 1 with some academic subjects as well as Art, Music, Design Technology, IT and Games, being taught by subject specialists.

Each year group has its own form and form tutor, and, with a very favourable teacher/pupil ratio of about 1:12, each child is ensured of individual attention and continuous assessment of progress. Throughout the Upper School, the curriculum is taught by subject specialists who take the National Curriculum as their starting point, but extend it significantly.

We believe that our children will be well prepared with a sound academic base, an excellent work ethic, self-confidence and high aspirations for entrance to the Secondary Stage of their education. The practical strategies and skills that children will need to succeed in their future school are taught by a highly qualified, motivating and dedicated staff.
