WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!
St Nicholas School is a Voluntary Aided Church School and enjoys a good relationship with local churches in the community. Pupils are offered excellent opportunities to learn and develop, clearly set within a Christian context.
The accommodation houses twelve classrooms, shared practical areas, a library, an ICT suite, a music/drama room, a hall and kitchen and staff and office facilities. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. There is a playground at the front of the school and soft play area to the rear.
St Nicholas School’s mission is to
enable children to grow creatively and
to enjoy achieving excellence within a
Christian learning environment.
There are about 320 children on
roll. They are organised into eleven
classes, each with its own class
teacher. Our aim is to provide the best
possible teaching and learning, so for
some lessons, such as PE or Music,
teachers may work in other classes in
the year group, to maximise their
strengths and expertise.
Children may work in groups of
varying size - class groups, smaller
groups, pairs or as individuals,
according to the task. Good planning
and effective liaison by year group staff
ensure that all children receive their full
entitlement to the National Curriculum.
The curriculum throughout the school is
carefully planned and structured from the National
Curriculum programmes of study to provide breadth
and balance. Particular emphasis is placed on
teaching the skills of literacy and numeracy. Work
in these and other subjects, especially ICT, is often
planned around a series of themes, ensuring that
the curriculum is delivered in a lively, interesting
way. Teaching may take the form of a series of
projects or studies undertaken by the class working
together. It may involve studies or visits away from
the classroom or the use of visiting speakers.
The activities may vary from year to year
according to the interests and expertise of the
staff, but currently include sports, the Arts, senior
choir, junior choir, orchestra, recorders. Our sports
teams compete in local tournaments. Our senior
choir and orchestra participate in local musical
events and lead the annual Carol Service in the
Parish Church. Different year groups take
responsibility for a drama or musical production
throughout the year. There are residential visits
for some year groups, covering Environmental
Education, Creative Arts and Outdoor Activities.
