WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

Uffculme School is a Foundation comprehensive school for boys and girls aged 11-16. There are 925 on roll and it is expected that about 188 pupils will be admitted into Year 7 in September 2006. Last year 240 applications for admission were received. As well as being responsible for their own admissions arrangements, Foundation Schools employ their staff and own their sites and buildings.

AIMS

To provide effective formal and informal learning through which all of its pupils will:

  • achieve their potential in as many ways as possible,
  • develop spiritual and moral values,
  • obtain a variety of skills and qualifications which will prepare them for the next stage of their lives,
  • be part of a community within which all will feel secure and valued.

CURRICULUM

Education Acts require schools to have a balanced and broadly based curriculum which “promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the pupils at the school”. It must also prepare pupils for “the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life”.

Curriculum is followed in English, mathematics, science, technology, ICT, history, geography, art, music, physical education and French. In Year 8 the opportunity to take German as well as French is offered to all pupils. All pupils also take drama and religious education.

SPECIALIST STATUS

As part of our work for Specialist Status, we do a range of work beyond our immediate school community. We regularly work with both our Feeder Primaries and schools within the Culm Valley Schools Association. Teachers from our department visit local schools and teach ICT; local Primary pupils visit our ICT Suites; our Community Support Technician visits Primaries for IT Support; we help prepare resources and we also hold regular ICT Coordinator Conferences to enable our colleagues to meet and learn about new developments in ICT. This not only benefits staff, but also the pupils. They come to know us, we come to know them and this all makes the transition from Primary to Secondary that bit easier.

We also hold Community ICT Evening Classes. These are open to all members of the local community, not just people somehow linked to the school. Due to the nature of our Specialist Status, the classes are free of charge. Currently they run on Wednesday Evenings form 6pm-730pm. We cover topics such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Internet and Email and Presentation Software. A wide range of abilities are welcomed! We are currently looking at Microsoft PowerPoint. After the New Year, we hope to cover more issues such as Internet Safety for Parents.

We also hold an annual ICT Enrichment Day for a mixture of our Year 7 pupils and Year 6 pupils from our 8 Feeder Primaries. This is always an enjoyable day and also always a lot of fun. This year we joined forces with Project Cosmic in Ottery St Mary and did some amazing animation work!
