WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

About 125 years ago, Lord Sidmouth built Upottery School, providing free education for the village children. That distinctive building, with its single high-vaulted schoolroom and the adjacent Victorian schoolhouse, is very much a feature of the village landscape still. It was built in the centre of our village for the local community and is surrounded by beautiful countryside in the heart of the Blackdown Hills on the edge of the three counties. The listed original Victorian building has been improved and extended to meet the needs of a modern curriculum, but the school retains much of its close family atmosphere.

GROUNDS AND FACILITIES

We are fortunate to have extensive, safe grounds, which include:

  • A large school field with wild area
  • Netball tarmac court and playgrounds
  • Outdoor swimming pool, with disabled access
  • Interactive whiteboards in every classroom
  • Computers with Internet access
  • Bright and airy library with a large selection of books
  • Adventure play area

AIMS

  • To recognise each child as an individual encouraging and enabling the fulfilment of every child's potential through challenging, investigative and problem solving activities
  • To provide a sound foundation and effective development of literacy and numeracy thus ensuring that all children achieve the highest possible standards.
  • To provide every child with his/her full entitlement to a broad and balanced education based on the National Curriculum and RE requirements
  • To develop confidence, enthusiasm for learning, open and enquiring minds and the ability to think creatively, independently and responsibly
  • To provide a structured environment which will encourage: thoughtfulness and consideration, the ability to work together and relate to others, an appreciation of, and acceptance of, responsibility for the world in which we live
  • To provide as wide a variety of activities as possible in order to extend the children's abilities, widen their horizons and equip them to tackle new challenges with confidence.
  • To work in partnership towards shared goals valuing the contributions of children, staff, parents, governors the wider community.
  • To encourage children to understand and adopt healthy lifestyles.
  • To provide an environment where children feel safe and secure.
  • To prepare children for the next stages in their lives.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The Education Reform Act 1988 introduced the National Curriculum for all children aged between 5 and 16 in state schools in England and Wales. This has since been revised and is now known as Curriculum 2000. The pupils also receive a daily literacy and mathematics lesson.

Key Stage One (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2)
Key Stage Two (Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6)

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

We are able to offer private music tuition in a wide range of instruments. Details of this service can be obtained from the Administrator. When possible, children have the opportunity to cook due to additional voluntary help. Volunteers organise netball and football clubs and arrange matches against other schools. We also run successful lunchtime and afternoon clubs. These have involved: Fitness Club, Art Club, Recorders, Football and Netball. These change each term so parents and children are notified through the monthly Newsletter.
