WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL!!!

Our school offers spacious accommodation that includes sixteen classroom bases, hall/dining area and extensive grounds. We also have an ICT suite and a library. The school is arranged around a central administrative area with three corridors leading from this. As we work very closely with a range of different agencies we have a community wing that accommodates the health team from ‘Sure Start’and also has space for a range of community activities.

Willowbrook has a mixed intake of approximately 250 pupils of ages 3 - 11 years. The Planned Admission Number for the main school is 55 in each year group. The nursery has 52 children, 26 in the morning and 26 in the afternoon. We are therefore a large primary school in Exeter.

An important part of school is learning how to learn. The best learning takes place when the children are happy, relaxed and are actively involved in their education. They need a belief in themselves and a trust in the people they are working with. We aim to provide a learning environment that meets the needs of the children in our care.

AIMS

  • Teach the children to be learners for life.
  • Inspire all children to learn by providing creative, stimulating and challenging opportunities.
  • Value the strengths, achievements, cultures and beliefs of all.
  • Encourage children to respect themselves, others, their school and their community.
  • Provide opportunities for everyone’s emotional, physical, social and academic growth.
  • Provide a safe, secure and well managed community environment.
  • Support and further develop relationships with parents, the school community and the wider community.
  • Encourage parents/carers to take an active part in their child’s education.

CURRICULUM

The quality of life and learning at our school is all important and we endeavour to provide a curriculum that extends beyond the one contained in the National Curriculum. It is a combination of the broad and balanced range of subject areas which make up the National Curriculum and the personal, moral and social skills and attitudes which enable children to mature into well educated adults. The school follows the NC and uses the curriculum guidelines contained in the literacy and numeracy strategies and in the documents produced by the Qualification and Curriculum Authority as a basis for planning.

The children are taught through a blend of class teaching, semi- specialist teaching, in small groups or individually as appropriate to the task involved. The curriculum is delivered using single subject lessons and topic based work. In addition a few weeks during each school year are focused on particular areas of curriculum and community education when parents are invited to join in and experience the curriculum with children.

NURSERY

The nursery is open every morning from 9 - 11.30 and every afternoon from 12.45 - 3.15 and caters for 26 children at each session. The unit is staffed by a qualified nursery teacher and 2 nursery nurses who work half a week each. The nursery is an educational nursery and is funded by the LEA. Our curriculum policies in the school are designed to encompass the 3 - 12 age range.

The nursery environment has been organised and resourced to develop children’s skills and attitudes socially, creatively, physically and academically. Play is used as the main vehicle for learning. Nursery children also have access to supervised outdoor activities and to PE in the hall.

Before your child starts at the nursery the nursery staff arrange to visit each child at home. More detailed admission arrangements will be discussed then.
