WELCOME TO OUR SCHOOL

Burton School is a Church of England Controlled Primary School located in the village of Burton in Christchurch Dorset. The school has close links with St. Lukes Church in the village. It is a focus for the village and has a reputation as a happy, caring school.

The staff and the governors are intent on providing the best for Burton children. The evidence of this can be seen when you look at the classrooms and displays of work around the school. The look of the school is very important to us. The classrooms are bright, attractive and well resourced. Besides the day to day resources you would expect to find in classrooms, all classes have at least one computer. Outside we have a good sized playing field, an adventure playground for the younger children, and a 'wild area'.

AIMS AND VALUES

We want Burton school to:

  • Be a happy and caring school.
  • Provide a wide range of opportunities for the children's academic and social development.
  • Work with all members of the school community.
  • Provide a high quality learning environment.
  • Be well respected.
We want our children to:
  • Be confident and articulate.
  • Do their best and be proud of their achievements.
  • Develop good attitudes, social skills, creative skills, and academic skills.
  • Develop the ability to work independently and as part of a group.

CURRICULUM

As in other state schools, when children start school in reception they follow the foundation curriculum. This is divided into six aspects— Emotional, personal and social development; communication, language and literacy; mathematical development; creative development; knowledge and understanding of the world and physical development. For children who have been to a playgroup this is a continuation of what they started at the playgroup.

The children of statutory school age follow the National Curriculum. This means they follow nationally agreed programmes of study in literacy, numeracy, science, art, music, physical education, history, geography and design and technology. In addition to the subjects specified in the National Curriculum the school curriculum also includes religious education, personal and social education and citizenship.

With the youngest children, we teach the elements of literacy and numeracy for short periods of time. As they get older and able to concentrate for longer periods of time, these are incorporated into literacy and numeracy ‘hours’. These take a substantial part of the time available, but we still provide a broad range of subjects for the children because we believe it is important.
