ABOUT US

Springdale was built in 1966. There are ten classrooms, two of which were newly built in 2000, and a large hall used for worship, PE, drama and dance. The addition of a purpose-built library has enabled the staff to ensure that all our children learn library and study skills in a well resourced and stimulating environment. There is disabled access to all areas of the school. A disabled toilet is available in the workshop and in the main entrance for visitors. The workshop provides an additional teaching area for small group work, music tuition and design technology including food technology.

All the classrooms are carpeted and have access to an outside area for practical activities. Every class has access to an Interactive White Board and at least two computers which are used in a variety of ways to allow children to develop computer literacy skills and to support their learning in other subjects. Two banks of 17 laptops are used by children throughout the school and we have 110 computers in total for children’s use. Most of our computers are networked.

AIMS

We aim to help children to develop:

  • Their full potential socially, academically and physically, regardless of gender, ethnic background or disability;
  • An inquiring and challenging mind: questioning, reasoning, evaluating and reflecting;
  • The skills of learning: independence, co-operation, the ability to find, organise, record and communicate knowledge and ideas and an awareness of safety considerations;
  • To become resilient, persistent learners with the confidence to make appropriate choices;
  • Knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of all Foundation Stage and National Curriculum subjects and the ability to use this knowledge effectively;
  • Spirituality, aesthetic appreciation, creativity and imagination;
  • Emotionally - articulating their feelings, building self-discipline and self esteem;
  • Care and responsibility for others' needs and an understanding and tolerance of the wider community.

ORGANISATION

Following the introduction of the National Curriculum, schools were recommended to adopt a standard year classification.

This is as follows:

4-5 years Reception - Foundation Stage

5-6 years Year 1 - National Curriculum - KS1

6-7 years Year 2 - National Curriculum - KS1

7-8 years Year 3 - National Curriculum - KS2

8-9 years Year 4 - National Curriculum - KS2

This pattern continues in the Middle and Upper schools.

Children are admitted into the Foundation Stage classes according to their age. From Year 2 onwards there are two mixed ability classes for each age group. In all classes the child's age and ability influence the tasks given and the standard of work expected. (KS1 = Key Stage 1 / KS2 = Key Stage 2)

LEARNING STYLES

Children learn in different ways and have different strengths, so teachers will use a variety of strategies to help the children to learn.

Whatever children's abilities, children need parents who will build their self-esteem and support their achievements at all levels. Parents need to build confidence and support their children to enable them to make progress. Mistakes are very valuable - they are how we learn. Please support us by viewing all your children's work in a positive way.

We have worked with parents to help children to develop the skills of learning. These are the ‘5R’s’ – Resilient, Resourceful, Responsible, Reasoning and Reflective. They underpin all the work in school (and life).

OUT OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Peripatetic music staff visit the school and children from Year 2 upwards have the opportunity to learn to play a range of instruments during the school day including the violin, cello, mini bass, clarinet and flute.

The school has an orchestra, which meets after school and achieves a high standard, performing regularly to parents and friends.

Both the Junior Choir (Year 2) and the Senior Choir (Years 3 and 4) meet during lunchtimes and perform for a range of audiences.

All children from Year 2 upwards are able to join the recorder group.

Other out of school clubs are organised according to the time of year and the interests and expertise of the staff.
