A school, as with any community or family, has to be visited if you want to get a feel for its atmosphere, and to know whether it is the right environment for your child. Children should be happy at school. That means that each child should be accepted as the individual that he or she is. It means that they should be supported and encouraged and challenged to achieve their own personal best. It also means that each child should be helped to feel they are an important member of the school community and that they have a significant contribution to make to it. We try to do all these things, and more, for our children at St. Thomas Garnet's.

The Nursery provides a safe, secure, happy and well equipped environment for children from three years of age to school age. It is under the supervision of a qualified teacher with a full time assistant. Within its self-contained classroom all the equipment has been chosen to enhance and compliment the teaching of social skills, reading, writing, pre-number skills and constructive play. As the Nursery forms part of the School, the children are able to share the facilities of the main school and utilise the skills of the specialist teachers, especially in areas such as Music and P.E. Close liaison between The Nursery and Infant School ensures a firm foundation and worry free transition into our main school.

The Kindergarten of St Thomas Garnet's School provides a safe, secure and well-equipped environment for children from the age of three months to five years. The Kindergarten occupies a self-contained unit within the School grounds, where we aim to provide a safe, secure and homely atmosphere, to help even the youngest, shyest child settle very quickly. The children are split into groups, age-based, and all of the groups have qualified members of staff to give each of them full attention.

Our drama department is under the direction of actress and playwright Alice Flynn, an experienced practitioner within the field of performing arts and arts education. Alice has worked throughout Dorset with companies such as Bournemouth Theatre in Education, Wave Arts Education Agency and Treehouse Theatre and is actively involved within the regional arts scene.

Drama students have the opportunity to practise speaking poetry and prose for their LAMDA exams and the Bournemouth Festival, in which the school consistently achieves very high standards. Students also come together with their classmates every week for a group drama session where they gain a well-rounded experience of drama through practical lessons exploring a variety dramatic styles and approaches to theatre.

From the age of 2 Kindergarten children have class music lessons. As they progress through the school they have the opportunity to expand their musical experiences. Recorder tuition is offered to all, and our recorder groups and soloists have been successful at both the Bournemouth and Southampton Music Festivals. Pupils are able to join the Choir which regularly performs both at school and at festivals. Over the years we have been named Bournmouth Festival Junior Choir of the Year 7 times. A number of our children have been successful in gaining entry to the local Church Choirs. Specialist Music Tuition is provided for Piano, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Saxophone, Oboe, Guitar, Violin and Cello. Each Friday afternoon children who play instruments are invited to join our Orchestra, where they can have a taste of making music together. Whether you sing or play an instrument, music is for enjoyment.
