Swanage First School
Mount Scar, BH19 2EY, UK Swanage

Our school is an attractive Victorian building constructed of Purbeck stone and situated on the hillside with fine views overlooking Swanage Bay. We have an award winning wild life area, attractive gardens and fenced sports courts. A large playing field is a short walk away.

We are the largest of four First schools in the seaside town of Swanage. The children leave us at nine years to attend Swanage Middle School. We work closely with all our schools in the Purbeck Pyramid and also liaise with the Cygnets Playgroup, which is situated within the school grounds. Before starting school, children will come into our Reception Classes to become familiar with their surroundings and teachers. We believe that it's very important for parents and children to feel happy, secure and well informed at the start of their schooling.

Our aim in these important first years of schooling is to lay the foundations for adult life. We provide a happy, caring environment which is conducive to learning. During their time in Swanage First School we aim to ensure that all children, regardless of their race, gender, religion or cultural background should:-

  • Develop fully their academic and physical abilities, their moral and social awareness and their aesthetic and spiritual appreciation.
  • Develop all aspects of personality and character that make a well balanced individual.
  • Learn appropriate behaviour and good manners.
  • Learn to co-operate, work together and show mutual respect through caring for and showing consideration towards other people and for their school environment.
  • Be encouraged to develop self esteem, take a pride in their work and their growing abilities, as well as valuing the achievements of others.
  • Develop a sense of self reliance and an ability to work with increasing independence and confidence.
  • Develop positive attitudes towards school, the community in which they live and the wider world from within a secure, happy and caring environment.
  • Develop an enjoyment of learning

The Cygnets Playgroup is a pre-school provider which meets daily and is run independently of the school. The group use many of the school facilities and good liaison exists between us. The Playgroup staff and our reception staff do meet at important times of the year to ensure a smooth changeover at the age of 4+.

There are 142 children on roll and from September 2007 these will be organised in SIX registration groups according to their age for the morning session and FIVE groups for the afternoon sessions with the KS2 children being taught in two groups in the afternoon.

The School provides a broad curriculum which covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. We deliver an exciting and practical curriculum, incorporating a variety of teaching techniques. This ensures that each child has the opportunity to learn to the best of their ability and to achieve their potential. We treat our pupils as individuals and give them the independence and confidence needed to build a firm educational foundation.
