ABOUT US

The first Headteacher of Talbot Combined School coined the phrase “Not just a school – more a way of life” and this motto still stands. At Talbot we aim to provide children with the widest possible education enabling them to achieve the best they can.

We set out to provide a stimulating learning environment that gives children opportunities to learn all the basic skills in literacy and numeracy and provides them with a breadth, balance and continuity on which to grow to their full potential. Subjects such as physical education, music and art are all given high priority along with the more traditional academic lessons of the National Curriculum. We aim to equip our children not just for the next steps in their education but also for life beyond school and that means work and play!

SCHOOL DAY

  • Begins at 8.40 a.m. and ends at 3.10 p.m. Registration closes at 8.50 a.m. after which pupils are recorded as late.
  • All pupils have a mid-morning break and our younger children a mid-afternoon break.
  • Lunch is taken from 12 noon to 1.00 p.m.
  • Teachers are on duty from 8.30 a.m. each morning and for safety reasons children should not be left by parents until then.
  • A packed lunch and drink (and mid morning snack) are required for lunch time, a piece of fruit or vegetable is provided for children up to and including Year 2. Parents who are on Income Support or Jobseeker’s Allowance (income based) may be entitled to free school lunches for their children and need to discuss this with the Benefits Agency. Hot meals are provided for all children benefiting from free lunches and can be purchased by other families. Please ask at the office for details.
  • We have a policy promoting the regular drinking of water. All pupils are encouraged to keep a small bottle of water and to sip from this as required. These can be replenished from water dispensers throughout the day.
  • A named shoe bag, containing their P.E. kit, should be hung on the child’s peg.
  • Sweets should not be brought into school.
  • In support of those pupils who have allergic reactions to certain food products we are a nut free school and would ask all parents to consider this when packing snacks and lunches for your children.

CURRICULUM

Talbot Combined School follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales, religious education and the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice ensuring that all pupils benefit from teaching that meets their individual needs. Copies of this are available. The National Curriculum comprises four core subjects

  • Information Communication Technology (ICT)
and seven foundation subjects
  • Geography

  • Art
  • Design technology

MUSIC

From Year 4 children have the opportunity to begin learning various different musical instruments at Talbot, and may audition to join the School Band. In addition, they may be able to join the Middle School Choir.

The School Band perform at a number of events during the school year such as the Summer Concert, and play regularly in school assemblies. During 2003 they were honoured to play at Poole Civic Centre. The Middle School Choir also perform outside school and traditionally entertain local senior citizens with carol singing in December.

Additionally trips are arranged for Talbot children to go to musical and cultural events such as the Dorset Youth Orchestra concerts and ballet performances at Lighthouse, Poole.
