The school is Voluntary Aided and students benefit from financial support through The Thomas Hardye Foundation. Thomas Hardye founded the first free school in Dorchester in 1569, and his life is commemorated on a wall plaque in St Peter’s Church, Dorchester.
As the school for the town and area, it now has some 2,400 students, including a Sixth Form of about 880 students, the largest in the UK. We are exceptionally well-resourced, and offer immense opportunities for students. The Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre is on site, and along with our newly completed dry sports hall we can offer excellent sports facilities including two swimming pools to complement our large sports fields.
The school has been awarded the Charter Mark, Schools Curriculum Award, European Curriculum Award, Investors in People, Arts Mark Gold, Education Extra Award, and two School Achievement Awards. We believe these awards reflect the quality of learning and care the school provides.

The great attraction of the Sixth Form is the quality and quantity of courses available. The Thomas Hardye Sixth Form offers more than 85 courses including AS and A2 Levels, BTEC First, and CACHE, Diplomas and Certificates as well as GCSEs. The School is also a recognised centre for the highly regarded International Baccalaureate.

A Fresh Way to Study
In the Sixth Form you will study subjects in depth. You will be more responsible for your learning and creativity, for the direction of your studies and for planning your private study. You will find in most courses that much of the work is done in your own study time.
You will also find that the students around you are well motivated and that as you go on, the emphasis is more towards working with your teachers than on working for them.
