| ABOUT US
Verwood first school is a Church of England first school. We believe that this gives us a wonderful foundation on which to build and we believe strongly that the Lord is with us each day and as we meet as a Governing Body to make decisions to give the children of Verwood First school the best education possible.
We are proud of our children and aim to celebrate all their achievements. We are conscious that children learn in different ways and that they have talents in different areas. We believe that it is our role to find this potential and allow for its expression. We want our children to be active in the learning process and to be aware of how to become a good learner. We want our children to see the school as their school, one in which they have a voice and an opinion and where their opinion can influence the direction of the school.

| The Curriculum is the sum of all that happens to a child at school including the formal programme and informal programme of activities. When this programme is balanced and appropriate it produces a unique atmosphere.
At Verwood C.E. First School we are committed to a curriculum with your children at its heart giving meaning to the world around them and promoting their security and self-esteem within the school community.
Each child is unique and special, with their own personality, abilities and aptitudes. We are very proud that our curriculum recognises their differences and provides the means and encouragement for every child to achieve their potential. We expect high standards in both work and behaviour, and we want the children to enjoy their learning and to tackle everything with enthusiasm.
The curriculum is organised around topics or themes, which provide learning opportunities across different subject areas. Children learn best from first hand experiences which make sense of the world around them. The curriculum is planned using National Curriculum Guidelines, Dorset Curriculum Policy and our own Curriculum statements.

| An excellent playgroup is run three days a week in the Campus Youth Centre. Children who attend would normally be expected to join Verwood C.E. First School, and there is a strong liaison between playgroup and school. Playgroup children come into school regularly.
|
| A few months prior to starting school with us your child will be invited to come to Pre-School Club. This club is run for the 'Rising Five' child and parent. The parents, staff and children are encouraged to join in with the activities together, talk and listen and help to clear the room at the end of the Club. We hope the Pre-School Club will show your child that school is an exciting and interesting place and encourage you to take an active part in your child's education prior to your child starting school. You can meet staff and other children who will be starting school with them.
At first the children attend mornings only. In the child's second term the children stay all day. The Headteacher and teachers always liaise most carefully with you to make sure this is a calm and happy introduction to school.
