Winton Primary is a three form entry school educating children between the ages of four and eleven. There are approximately 600 children in the school organised into mixed ability classes of no more than thirty. Each class has its own teacher but the staff work together to plan the learning to ensure equal opportunity for all pupils. The teachers are supported by a team of skilled and well qualified Teaching Assistants. There is also a Special Educational Needs Coordinator whose role involves ensuring the best possible progress for pupils who experience difficulties in learning.

Housed in a fine modern building the school occupies a large, attractive site in a quiet residential area.

There is a large car park with traffic calming features and a safe drop-off zone around the edge.

Airy attractive classrooms are a feature; many equipped with interactive whiteboards. There are also specialist teaching areas including two well equipped ICT suites, a food technology kitchen, a drama studio and music room. The multi-purpose hall contains top quality fixed and moveable PE apparatus.

There is also a comprehensive range of stage lighting which allows us to present high quality school productions. Outside there are separate playgrounds for Reception, Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 containing play apparatus and shaded areas.

Beyond this is a large, level playing field for sport, and a wildlife garden containing an outdoor classroom.

We believe that it is vital that children get off to a flying start. Great care is taken to assess each individual’s stage of development and to plan tasks to ensure just the right amount of challenge so that optimum learning occurs and every child experiences success. In order to give teaching staff the maximum opportunity to meet children’s needs the Foundation Stage area is to be remodelled into three separate classrooms each with its own wet and role play areas. These new rooms will be furnished and decorated to provide children with the ideal environment in which to start their school careers.

Our aim is for all our pupils to achieve the best of which they are capable. Where barriers exist which prevent children progressing as they should extra support is provided. The school makes full use of external agencies to support pupils in overcoming their difficulties and also has links with a local Special school who provide further expert advice. The school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator ensures that all pupils with difficulties have appropriate programmes of support and that these work effectively.

The children benefit from a very broad and well balanced curriculum. The basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics are given the correct emphasis but children are also given every opportunity to learn about the world in which they live and to develop their imaginations through art, music and physical activity. Whenever possible learning is made more exciting and relevant through visits to places of interest and inputs from visiting experts.
