ABOUT US

The main building of the school was one hundred years old in 2003 and retains a lot of its old charm. The buildings are the property of the Trustees, to whom reference must be made before building alterations can be effected.

In the main building there are three classrooms and a hall, which interconnect. There is also a general purpose area known as the "Centre", which is used for assemblies, P.E. lessons, a dining room and as a venue for Playgroup and the After School Care Scheme. This building also houses a well-stocked library and a stage, which enjoys full lighting.

The school also benefits from a well-appointed demountable classroom, which houses the fourth class, and a recently refurbished drama and music area in the Rooms of Endeavour.

There are two large playgrounds at the rear of the school. There is no playing field on site, but there is a football field within walking distance, and facilities at the local cricket club are used in summer.

The school building meets all current health and safety requirements while retaining its hundred-year-old charm.

• To provide an education according to personal needs and in a manner which will enable them to discover and develop talents, whether they be academic, social, sporting, musical or artistic.
• To develop lively, enquiring minds giving the ability to argue and question rationally.
• To facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skills, encompassing the current requirements of the national curriculum, which will equip them to be successful to the best of their ability, in their future education and in adult life.
• The children are offered a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, which meets the requirement of the Education Reform Act. Core and Foundation subjects are taught separately as appropriate, but links with our termly broad themes are also fully exploited to enhance interest and variety. Most lessons consist of a amixture of whole class. group and individual teaching.

English

The aim of our English curriculum is to enable each child to develop to the full his/her ability to use and understand English.

Mathematics

The Mathematics curriculum follows the framework of the National Numeracy Strategy and is designed to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in Number, Shape, Space, measures and Data Handling.

Science

Science is taught throughout the age range at Abbey Village School. It is one of the core subjects of the National Curriculum.

Information and Communication Technology IT is used to enhance teaching in a number of subject areas, as deemed appropriate, but forms, in its own right, a core subject of the curriculum.

Art

Our Aim is to encourage children to select, interpret and record what they see, think and feel using a wide variety of media. They are encouraged to review and modify their work at an appropriate level.

Music

The musical education of the children is concerned with bringing them into contact with the fundamental activities of composing, performing and listening.

Technology

This curriculum area is concerned with priactical problem solving, using materials to solve problems as in the real world.

Humanities

Humanities takes the form of topic-based work that encompasses broadly equal amounts of History and Geography.

Physical Education

In P.E. we aim to develop the movement potential of each child through a wide range of activities.

Health Education

Biological aspects of personal growth and change and human reproduction are already contained in the National Currivculum for Science. Aspects outside the National Curriculum include: Relationships; self-esteem; some aspects of Drugs awareness; strateies for saying "No"; personal hygiene,

R.E. and Collective Worship

Religious Education lessons follow the Agreed Syllabus for Lancashire Schools, which can be viewed at the school office. Collective worship has a Christian basis. Hyms are sung and simple prayers are said, including the Lord's Prayer.

Modern Foreign Language

Although modern foreign languages are not a statutory part of the curriculum, we have decided to offer French to all our children at Abbey Village in order to enrich further their experience of language.

There are a number of clubs and groups, which cater for the varied interests of the children. These take place during the Dinner Break and after school.

Recorders, orchestra, Skittleball, Football, Rounders, Cross-country, Tag Rugby and an Environmental Group all contribute to broadening the normal curriculum. There are three extra curricular sporting groups, each meeting once a aweek for approximately an hour. These are Skittleball/Rounders, Football/Tag Rugby and Running.

The school also competes against other schools in Skittleball, Football, Rounders, Cricket, Swimming and Cross-country.

For the last two years, Abbey Village School has represented Chorley at the Lancashire Youth games in Tag Rugby. This is something we are very proud of!
