ABOUT US

Black Moss school is located in the new town of Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Black Moss is currently designated a school for pupils aged 5 to 19. Many pupils live in Skelmersdale, but pupils also travel from Ormskirk and the wider area of West Lancashire.

AIMS

To capitalise on each child's developmental capacity to learn academically, socially and emotionally with particular reference to preparing the child for the adaptive responses necessary for successfully meeting the varying demands of an ever changing society.

In fulfilling the above aims, each child will:

  • develop his/her academic learning capacity to the optimum in line with National Curriculum requirements.
  • be given opportunities to transfer the academic learning to everyday life and events.
  • develop qualities and knowledge that will prepare him/her for citizenship and post school life.
  • be encouraged to develop a positive self-concept which will give him/her as much confidence as possible to deal with problems and events as they may occur.
  • develop a capacity to have relationships with peers and adults which include empathy, cooperation, care and respect for others.

DEPARTMENTS

Junior Department (Key Stages 1 & 2) - this department meets the needs of children of primary school age.

Senior Department (Key Stage 3) - this department meets the needs of pupils who are the age of children in the first three years of a secondary school.

Leavers' Department (Key Stage 4) - this department meets the needs of children in the final two years of schooling together with a group of youngsters who choose to stay on after the age of 16 years. During this period, our pupils are introduced to colleges and training agency courses together with work experience.

CURRICULUM

The range of results of our National Curriculum Assessment for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 are offered below. During their school career all pupils are tested using national tests. The results are given in the form of a level between 1 and 10. The tests are administered for all the pupils in the country irrespective of their educational needs. Pupils who have not yet achieved a score which will put them at level 1 are given the letter 'W' as a score which stands for 'working towards level 1'. Where the score 'N' is given in a test, this means that the pupil did not achieve Level 2 and therefore the Teacher Assessment score is used to indicate his/her level of ability.
