This is a magnificent school, but it is no ivory tower. It is a warm and friendly place, open to all sections of the community, where pupils are happy and safe. There are high expectations of them, but I want them to leave Bolton School with the conviction that everything they strive for is possible. They will explore exciting and extensive opportunities, be encouraged to be inquisitive and to innovate, to face challenge and show leadership, and to be a force for good in the community.

Academic success is not enough. This school provides pupils with the broad educational experience which prepares them for a world where changing jobs is the norm and where leisure time is on the increase. A reference from Bolton School really means something. I believe that pupils enjoy their time here and leave as self confident young men who will make the most of what is to come.

The curriculum at Bolton School Boys' Division is organised in the spirit of the National Curriculum but is certainly not limited by it.

It provides a strong framework for future study, in that it:

• offers variety of choice within the constraints of a 40-period weekly timetable encourages breadth of experience without sacrificing depth of understanding
• combines traditional academic rigour with opportunities for self-expression and creativity
• offers the chance for all boys to study three science subjects as separate disciplines
• allows the possibility of two or more foreign languages being taken through to GCSE level

Depending upon the term, there are up to 90 weekly or fortnightly clubs, societies and practices available to the pupils (this number excludes the many music practices on offer). These range from subject-based clubs, such as Art Club, Science Club, Computer Club, Biology Club and The History Society to more wide-ranging societies such as Film Society, Warhammer Club, Creative Writing Club and Gameshow Club. There is also both a Junior Literary and Debating Forum and a Senior Literary and Debating Society, in which pupils of all ages can cut and sharpen their oratorical skill. Boys with musical and acting talents are also well-catered for at Bolton School. Music ensembles and drama rehearsals all take place in the lunch break and there are numerous concerts and productions every year. Sport also plays a central role in the activities programme.

Academic standards are high but this is no ivory tower. Each year more students sit A level exams and, each year, academic grades improve. Securing good A level grades is no longer enough. Universities and employers increasingly want to see evidence of other achievements and interests and your ability to add value to the community. The range of opportunities on offer to you at Bolton School is, I believe, second to none and you will have every chance to pursue interests and follow activities that build your character and your CV.

The A level years are intensive: they will be hard work but they will also be fun and will provide you with lifelong memories. Many Old Boltonians look back upon them as amongst the best years of their lives.
