ABOUT US

The school was built in 1874 as a Sunday School and Day School with an adjacent school house, which was occupied by the Headteacher. There are three classrooms, a hall, a library a resources room and a kitchen.

As an Aided Church of England school, the Governing Body are the employers and are responsible for the maintenance of the exterior of the building and any improvements to the interior. The school is maintained by Lancashire County Council who are the local education authority.

The school serves the village of Coppull and surrounding areas and caters for children from four to eleven years of age. St. John’s playgroup and pre-school meet every morning and some afternoons for children aged between two and four years.

The school is fortunate to be surrounded by spacious playing fields and ample playground areas. In addition there is a school garden.

Children are grouped in classes according to their age. The composition of the classes at the present time is as follows and the number on roll is 113.

• Class 1 - Reception children
• Class 2 - Year 1 and Year 2 children (age 5 - 7)
• Class 3 - Year 3 and Year 4 children (age 7 - 9)
• Class 4 - Year 5 and Year 6 children (age 9 - 11)

The school curriculum at Coppull St. John’s is designed to meet the full requirements of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Foundation Stage. It is in line with the curriculum policy statement of Lancashire County Council and the aims and mission statement of the school.

The school’s curriculum provides opportunities for learning in both the lessons taught as part of the school day, and the extra-curricular activities which deliberately extend and enhance the ‘formal’ curriculum.

Children will be taught using a variety of approaches, which will include the teaching of the whole class, working in a small group and working individually.

All subjects are taught in accordance with detailed schemes of work, devised within the school, which meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. Religious Education is provided according to a scheme of work which is approved by the School Governors.

In the Foundation Stage the children work on integrated studies in areas of experience outlined in the Foundation Stage document. They incorporate the Early Learning Goals which link the Pre-school years to the beginning of school. The National Curriculum for all subjects begins in Year 1.

We see extra-curricular clubs and activities as an extension of our school curriculum, which provide children with the opportunity to extend and enrich their learning in different subjects beyond the end of the school day.
