Lancashire LEA serves one of the largest shire counties in England with a total population of £1.5 million. There are 176,000 pupils in the County being educated in 30 nursery schools, 502 primary schools, 11 pupil referral units, 31 special schools and 89 secondary schools. Forty-eight per cent of schools in Lancashire are community schools.

Across the County pupil attainment at Key Stages 1, 2 & 3 is at or above the national average. GCSE results and A level results are also above the national average. OFSTED, through their rigorous programme of LEA and school inspection, have concluded that standards in Lancashire are high despite serving some of the most deprived areas in the country. Seventy per cent of primary schools and 78% of secondary schools have been judged to be good or very good.

Education within the County of Lancashire is currently delivered in districts grouped into three areas. Garstang lies in Area A (North Lancashire) with Lancaster, Wyre and Fylde.

The school curriculum comprises all of the learning experiences that each school plans for its pupils. The National Curriculum is an important part of the school curriculum.

The National Curriculum applies to pupils of compulsory school age in community and foundation schools, voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools. It is organised on the basis of five key stages. The National Curriculum does not apply to pupils in the Foundation Stage (3rd birthday to the end of the reception class). The curriculum for these pupils is organised to reflect the requirements of the Foundation Stage Profile (FSP). This is organised in six areas of learning:

1. Personal, social and emotional development
2. Communication, Language and literacy
3. Mathematical development
4. Knowledge and understanding of the world
5. Physical development
6. Creative development

Involvement and participation in a wide range of extra curricula activities is encouraged. Every effort is made to broaden the children's experiences by offering a range of extra curricula activities eg recorder, judo, football, skittleball, netball, rounders, dance, tag rugby, cricket, cycling proficiency etc. We are members of the Wyre District Sports Association and regularly host and participate in district competitions in a range of events.

During the school year a number of visits to places of interest are arranged in an effort to broaden educational experience and older pupils have the opportunity to participate in an residential outdoor adventure weekend (organised every two years for pupils in Years 5 & 6). Whilst extra curricular clubs are voluntary and beyond teachers’ contractual duties, a programme of club activities operates during the year to encourage pupil participation and involvement. Early morning activities are offered to older pupils during the year.
