ABOUT US

Great Arley opened in 1963 and is a purpose built special school maintained by Lancashire County Council. It is a day school for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 16 years who have moderate learning difficulties. Great Arley caters for children in the Fylde and Wyre Area and this includes Fleetwood, Thornton-Cleveleys, Poulton-le-Fylde, Over-Wyre, Garstang, Kirkham, Wesham, Weeton, Freckleton, Warton and Lytham St Annes.

There are up to 120 pupils on roll.

The National Curriculum is taught to all pupils at the appropriate age and includes the following subjects:

Core Subjects:- Mathematics, English, Science

Foundation Subjects:- History, Geography, Food and Textile Technology, Design Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Art and Design, Music, French and Physical Education

Cross-curricular Themes:- Personal, Social and Health Education, Careers Education and Guidance, Citizenship, Economic and Industrial Understanding, Environmental Education and European Awareness are also taught to pupils throughout the age range.

Most subjects are taught by the class teacher who also has pastoral responsibility for the children in the class, but some subjects such as Science, Food and Textile Technology, Craft, Design and Technology, French, Dance and Music are taught by a Specialist Teacher.

Lunchtime Clubs are run to give pupils something to do at Lunch time. There's a good range of clubs from active - football, to very quiet - craft and model making, very loud- music and karaoke. Some clubs are indoors and some are outdoors.

Clubs are run by Teaching Assistants who give their time to plan, organise and run clubs. Pupils change clubs on a half-termly basis. This allows all pupils access to all clubs.

Pupils do not have to attend a club, they are free to spend their free time at lunchtime getting some fresh air and playing with friends on the playground.
