ABOUT US

Lathom High School is an 11-16 co-educational, comprehensive school with 690 students on roll. We are a friendly and hard-working community in which all students are encouraged to achieve the best they can, confident that support and encouragement are there at all times. As a result of one of Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools' visits here, our approach to teaching and learning has been recommended as a model for other secondary schools across the North West.

The school has excellent facilities, and the most vital ingredient, a well-qualified and motivated staff.

AIMS

  • To enable students to achieve their maximum potential in external examinations
  • To provide a safe and supportive environment in which young people can develop as life-long learners, irrespective of ability, gender or ethnic origin
  • To develop confident young people capable of contributing to a rapidly changing world.

CURRICULUM

All students follow the National Curriculum. In Year 7 they study English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Spanish, Design and Technology, Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education, Information Communication Technology, Religious Education, Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.

The curriculum, as you can see, is broad and balanced and designed to give children the best opportunity possible to develop their skills and discover those areas in which they find success. The use of the school's Teaching and Learning and Behaviour Management Policies by all staff at all times ensures that students receive consistently high expectations of their performance and behaviour. As a result all visitors to the school, without exception, comment on the focused, calm, hard-working atmosphere apparent wherever they go. All students study between 7 and 10 GCSE subjects depending on ability. The majority of our young people continue their studies at higher and further levels of education.

RESOURCES

As a result of our successful bid for Technology College status the students will have access to the full range of educational aids; textbooks, computers and practical equipment necessary to provide rich forms of learning and independent research. Interactive whiteboards will be a key feature in all subject departments. Homework is an important part of schooling, developing habits of independent working needed throughout life. All students are issued with a Homework Diary at the beginning of each term in which they record work set. The Homework Diary serves another very important purpose. It is the first point of contact between the school and parents. There is a section on each page for parents and staff to draw attention to good or outstanding achievement or to raise concerns.

CARE

Schooling is not just about gaining qualifications, important as they may be. It is also about developing the 'whole child' and providing them with the confidence and social skills to make the best of their futures. We are proud of our student support system which encourages them to take responsibility for themselves and provides assistance at times of need. The school is organised so that each student is a valued member of a larger community. We help to settle them in by placing them in tutor groups with friends or children from the same area or primary school. Each group is under the guidance of a Form Tutor and, together with the Student Learning Manager for that year, they move up with the tutor group during the 5 years' schooling. This ensures that staff have a thorough knowledge of the academic progress and welfare of each person throughout their school career. Parents are encouraged to visit and talk with Form Tutors or Learning Managers if there is any cause for concern.
