ABOUT US

On January 12th, 1901 the main school building of the original Aspull Street school site was officially opened. Much of the work was incomplete but the new school was put into use. The school had records going back to 1873, when it is believed that the original school was opened.

Roundthorn school celebrated its 90th anniversary in June 1991 by producing a booklet containing some of the schools history.

At Roundthorn we offer a caring, stable and stimulating environment, in which everyone is valued and encouraged to develop the skills needed to investigate and appreciate our world and ourselves. We foster a happy, caring partnership of school, families and community, to develop mutual respect and self-esteem, resourcefulness and responsibility.

AIMS

Our aims are that children will:

  • Be happy to come to school and enjoy their lessons;
  • Work hard and do their best;
  • Develop skills in literacy (reading and writing), speaking and listening, numeracy (maths), ICT (working with computers) and use these skills in all areas of learning;
  • Have the confidence to work alone and with others;
  • Learn to think creatively and develop effective thinking skills so that they can make good choices and solve problems;
  • Develop a wide range of knowledge, skills and understanding which they can use both in school and in the outside world;
  • Believe in and value themselves;
  • Develop understanding of and respect for their own culture and beliefs and those of others;
  • Develop their physical skills and know the importance of keeping safe and enjoying a healthy lifestyle;
  • Be well prepared to make the most of future experiences, opportunities and responsibilities.

CURRICULUM

We believe that Primary Education should be exciting, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable. We encourage our children to be self-confident, knowledgeable, numerate, literate, articulate and able to think and reason for themselves.

Our methods of teaching and learning aim to give each pupil the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve as high a standard as possible. We are aware that each child brings to school different experiences interests and strengths and teachers work together to plan and prepare learning activities so that all pupils can take part in lessons fully and effectively.
