The National Picture
From September 2006, universities and colleges can charge new full-time students up to £3,000 a year for tuition fees. You can apply for a student loan for fees to cover 100% of these costs.
Non repayable bursaries and grants, as well as student loans for maintenance,
are also available to help with your living costs.
If your course begins in September 2006 or later, you can apply for a student loan to cover all of your tuition fees, and for a student loan of up to £4,405 for maintenance to cover your living costs.
These loans attract a low rate of interest, and your repayments don’t start until you have left higher education and are earning over £15,000.
Depending on household income, you may also get a non-repayable grant of up to £2,700. If that income is £17,500 or less you will receive the full £2,700 grant. A partial grant will be payable where household income is between £17,501 and £37,425.
Around half of all new full-time students are likely to be eligible for a full or partial grant.
Grants are payable in three instalments - one at the start of each term.
Up to £1,200 of the new grant will be paid in substitution for part of the student loan for maintenance.
