University of Chester Learning Resources

  • Learning Resources
  • students Learning Resources offers a wide range of services at our campuses in Chester and Warrington and at the Faculty of Health and Social Care Education Centres in local hospitals.

Within Learning Resources you will find the University's Library and Information Services, Media Services, Learning Support Services and Open Access Computing facilities. We hold extensive collections of books and journals (in printed and electronic format) to support University teaching and research, plus the audio-visual and IT resources to help staff and students prepare learning materials and produce assignments and dissertations.

Access to our catalogue is available through this website. Many of our resources are available electronically through IBIS the University intranet system, and in order to comply with subscription and licensing agreements access to IBIS is limited to registered members of University of Chester.

    Learning Support Services

The LSS team offer general support advice designed to enhance your learning skills and improve your academic performance. If you require subject-specific help, you need to contact your module tutor or another member of the academic staff.

The Learning Support Service staff offer guidance and support in areas such as:

    • Writing skills
    • Essay planning
    • Note- taking techniques
    • Examination and revision techniques
    • Structuring your written work
    • Enhancing critical thinking, evaluative and analytical skills
    • Coping with study-related stress
    • Time management

Small group workshops and individual tutorial support are available (by appointment).

    How to access the service

    (a) Read through the advice in the ‘Studying for Success’ booklet (available free from Learning Resources).

    (b) A large collection of books, videos and audio-cassettes is kept in a separate section of Learning Resources.

    (c) Review the material available to students on IBIS.

    Advice & Guidance:

    (a) Attend a workshop – details available from the LSS staff based in the Library (on both campuses) and published on IBIS and departmental notice boards.

    (b) Make an appointment with a member of the LSS team based in the Library.  Contact details, telephone extensions, room numbers, and times available will be published on the door of the LSS (on both campuses) and on the IBIS intranet site.  Arrange a time and venue which suits you both. It is often useful if you can provide examples of your work in advance of the meeting.

Please remember that at busy times (e.g. close to assessment deadlines) it may not be possible to make an appointment with your chosen team member immediately. It is important to plan your work early so that you avoid having to seek support from the LSS tutors at the last minute. Be sure to start working on your assignments as early as feasible.

    You can expect:

    • An introduction to the service in ‘Induction Week’
    • Your own copy of the ‘Studying for Success’ booklet in hard copy
    • Access & borrowing rights to the Study Skills collection held in Learning Resources
    • Free and confidential help on study problems
