How to Apply

BMus/BSc/BA (undergraduate degree)

Applications for the BMus/BSc Music/BA World Music Studies honours degree should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can contact them via their website (follow the link above), or write to them at: Rosehill, New Barn Lane, Cheltenham, Glos GL52 3LZ. Tel +44 (0)870 1122211 (enquiries) or +44 (0)870 1122200 (application materials).

Applicants who wish to pursue advanced instrumental or vocal tuition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama must indicate their preference by inserting "gsmd perf" in Section 3(f) of the UCAS form.

Postgraduate courses

You may apply either in hard copy or online. To apply online, please follow the links below. Please contact the Department of Music for a paper copy of the application form, or download a pdf version here. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Notes about applying online

Please read before starting your online application:

  • the first screen you will see is the login screen. If you have not used our online application system before, please click the "New User" link
  • you are also required to agree to the University's Data Protection declaration before starting to complete your application.
  • please proceed past the "Upload a Supporting Document" page.
  • after reading the checklist, you will finally arrive at the application form itself.
  • Please complete all the sections fully as indicated on the form and submit when complete. (Once you have reached this stage, you may save your application and return to it later.)
  • if you are required to submit additional supporting documents with your application, please copy and paste them into the Personal Statement box.

MA Musicology
Your application must include:

  • The application form. Please either complete the form online, or post a completed paper copy of your application.
  • Two references (one of which should be an academic reference). Either supply your referees' details on the online application form, or (if applying in hard copy) post the references to us with your application or arrange for your referees to forward them to us.
  • Details of courses taken at undergraduate level.
    Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the details into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • A copy of your degree certificate (if applicable). This must be sent to us by post.
  • Two possible dissertation topics, giving an outline of each. Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the topics into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • An example of written work on a musical subject (in English). Either include this on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the work into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form

MA Composition

  • Your application must include:

  • Two references (one of which should be an academic reference). Either supply your referees' details on the online application form, or (if applying in hard copy) post the references to us with your application or arrange for your referees to forward them to us.
  • Details of courses taken at undergraduate level.
  • Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the details into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • A copy of your degree certificate (if applicable). This must be sent to us by post.
  • Two possible dissertation topics, giving an outline of each. Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the topics into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form

  • A folio of compositions, with recordings where possible; recordings of electroacoustic works should be on digital audio tape or CD. Please either send this to us by post, or by email to the Programme Administrator.

Your application must include:

  • Two references (one of which should be an academic reference). Either supply your referees' details on the online application form, or (if applying in hard copy) post the references to us with your application or arrange for your referees to forward them to us.
  • Details of courses taken at undergraduate level.
    Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the details into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • A copy of your degree certificate (if applicable). This must be sent to us by post.
  • Two possible dissertation topics, giving an outline of each. Either include these on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the topics into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • A resume of performances and performance examinations and experience. Either include this on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the resume into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • An example of written work on a musical subject (in English). Either include this on a separate sheet with your postal application, or copy and paste the work into the "Personal Statement" section of the online application form
  • Applicants from outside the UK are asked to send an authenticated recording of their performance if they cannot attend an audition. Please either send this to us by post, or by email to the Programme Administrator.
