Welcome from Duncan Fleet, Headteacher of Culverhay School
I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce our school to you. I am sure that having visited us and talked to our boys you will agree that Culverhay is truly a family school where boys flourish academically, develop respect for others and grow in self-confidence.
The growing reputation of Culverhay Boys’ School continues through its designation as a Specialist Maths and Computing college. This is a resounding vote of confidence from the DfES, who have granted Culverhay the status in recognition of its strength in the specialist areas. Specialist Status will be the catalyst that will ensure continuing high levels of education into the future. The DfES acknowledgement of the strength of teaching and learning is confirmed through the school’s last OFSTED report that stated “the school provides a very good standard of education for all its pupils.”
Culverhay has developed a culture that respects and values the individual. Relationships between the boys and staff are excellent and to achieve success they work closely together. We concentrate on building self-esteem and a “can do” attitude. We believe that a boy’s potential is not limited and strive to ensure that they outperform national expectations. We work closely with parents to ensure all of our boys succeed.
This is the secret of our success, treating everyone as an individual. From the moment they arrive, boys are assessed, to discover their talents. Challenging targets are set and monitored constantly, with parents being involved through our Academic Review days. Culverhay has repeatedly outperformed other schools in terms of the amount of progress that pupils have made between Key Stage 2 and GCSE results. Indeed, last summer we were invited to a celebration in London as one of the top 200 schools nationally. The most recent OFSTED report noted that boys of all abilities surpass national expectations both in GCSE and A Level results.
Culverhay is a modern, forward thinking school that recognizes the need for boys to have the skills to survive in a rapidly changing world. We believe that Culverhay provides the foundation for life-long learning, teaching boys the key skills necessary to make them flexible, creative and employable. Culverhay has been awarded the International School Award in recognition of our links with schools abroad, giving boys the opportunity to visit different countries and learn about other cultures. We have achieved the Healthy Schools Award demonstrating our commitment in developing health education throughout the school. Our extra curricular activities encourage boys to extend their academic interests and take part in community action; our outstanding commitment to sport has also been recognized with the Gold Sportsmark.
Ultimately, our aim is to support boys in becoming well-qualified, rounded, happy adults who can play a leading role in their local communities. We encourage you to visit the school and I am always available to answer your questions.
