Our School

Bedford Modern School is an acknowledged centre of excellence comprising Junior, Senior and Sixth Form departments. This is a forward-looking and rapidly developing school, which has a long history and flourishes on the challenge of integrating the best of the
new within a tried and trusted culture of success.

We are a thriving, busy community providing a highly successful combination of excellent facilities, first class teaching and traditional values. We are proud of our academic standards, our wide range of cultural and sporting opportunities and our exceptionally caring
pastoral structure. We want our students to gain the confidence and academic results that will give them the competitive edge which will secure them a place at both their chosen university and a future place of work.

Our greatest "value-added" factors are not so much in the excellent examination results the students achieve, but also the confidence and self esteem a Bedford Modern education imparts. Our students will leave us able to stride confidently into a world where their
talents will be recognised and fulfilled.

Our Vision

Bedford Modern School is in many ways a unique school - an independent school which is free of pretentiousness, producing students with a vigorous intellectual and enthusiastic involvement in the equally demanding challenges of a busy school environment. We are committed to the development of the whole person by rigorously pursuing a well-rounded education.

The happy child is likely to be the most fulfilled, and we want students above all to enjoy their time with us. Learning itself should be challenging and stimulating - not just hoops to be jumped. We are unashamedly demanding in our academic standards.  Our curriculum is planned from age 7 through to age 18 and is extremely flexible, allowing the typical student personal and academic breadth.

Traditional subjects rub shoulders with more recent additions. For example, we are a centre of excellence for both science and languages, whilst performing arts has an outstanding local and national reputation. We seriously value the individual and their choices rather than shunting them down pre-ordained routes. There is no BMS 'clone'.

Pastoral care of the individual is therefore at the heart of what we are as a school.  Our common rooms ( from Year 7 upwards) give an almost unique feel to our day school and provide a warm environment to make friends. The relationship with the family is crucial and it is this triangle of respect which we seek to develop and nurture: school to student to family.

The School is a multi-cultural and socially mixed community, and, as such, we learn to respect and build up one another. Friendships which develop are long-lasting and relationships between staff and students are warm and natural.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Welcome to the Junior School - a friendly and happy environment where children enjoy excellent teaching in first class surroundings.
There are over 230 boys and girls in this busy and thriving school but we consider each one of them an important individual. Our caring and supportive atmosphere ensures that children flourish and develop their talents to the full.

A visit to the school will quickly confirm that we are dedicated to providing a motivated and purposeful environment where pupils are challenged intellectually, creatively and physically whilst developing a willingness to learn and a desire to achieve success. New pupils quickly experience a feeling of belonging and become very proud of their school.

We have spacious and modern buildings with specialist rooms for Art and Science, a splendid library, ICT centre, Design Technology suite, designated Year 3 classrooms and play area and a recently opened £1.4 million extension providing a state-of-the-art School Hall and additional classrooms.

We are sure that your child will want to join us, but come and see for
yourself. I look forward to meeting you.

  • SENIOR SCHOOL

The Senior School is a supportive and vibrant community of 682 pupils aged 11 to 16 years. Pupils belong to Year Groups of between 120 and 150 students, which are then sub-divided into smaller Tutor Groups of about 20.

Every pupil has a personal tutor, who supervises and takes an interest in their academic progress, co-curricular activities and sporting interests. Tutors meet with their pupils on a twice daily basis and there is at least one longer pastoral session each week. Each Year Group has its own common room for use at break and lunchtimes with a study area and recreational facilities.

We believe that common sense and courtesy lie at the heart of pastoral care. We stress self-discipline and high standards of personal conduct. The tutorial system and academic organisation are
discrete, working in parallel with each other. Teaching class sizes are a maximum of 25 and often many fewer.

  • Co-Curricular

Our students' school experience is enriched at each stage by the provision of an extensive range of co-curricular opportunities.

In the Junior School every pupil is attached to one of four Houses which provides a competitive incentive in games, conduct and work. Additionally there are many clubs and activities that operate during lunchtime and after school.  Visits from travelling theatre groups, field trips, joint activities with other local schools and excursions all assist in developing pupils interests and enthusiasms.

The Outdoor Opportunities programme is a comprehensive and integral introduction from Years 6 - 8. This can play a vital role in the development of every student in developing independence, new skills and taking responsibility. It leads to a variety of opportunities from Year 9 onwards including expeditions to Europe and a biennial remote expedition to the Developing World.

Another option from Year 9 onwards is the Combined Cadet Force which is open equally to both boys and girls and students' can choose to join the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines or RAF. Cadets are trained in specific military and survival skills and are given significant opportunities for sport and outdoor adventure training.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is another option from Year 10 which is non-competitive and open to all on a voluntary basis. There are three levels of attainment: Bronze, Silver and Gold each of which has four sections - Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Expedition.

In the Senior School and Sixth Form students are members of one of six Houses who challenge for the House Trophy involving around fifty events over the School year. Sporting, artistic, dramatic and musical activities operate on both School and House tiers and over sixty non-sporting clubs and societies operate in the Senior School.

A Community Service Programme is a fundamental part of school life and includes on-going voluntary work, fundraising events, the Senior Citizens' Christmas Party and Youth Action who have organised charity football tournaments to raise money for autism and homeless charities.
