Joining Bedford School

|
Bedford is a leading boarding and day School for boys where traditional values combine with innovative educational thinking to provide a stimulating environment. Every boy is encouraged to build upon his individual strengths, to develop a sense of his own worth, to surprise himself, and ultimately, to leave the School with his ambitions extended.
To gain a sense of the vibrant, friendly atmosphere that underpins life at Bedford, please do visit us to see the School in action and to meet the staff and some of our boys.
We welcome visitors throughout the academic year, including holiday periods, but it is during term time that the School buildings and facilities really come to life. You may also wish to attend one of our forthcoming Open Days.
We look forward to meeting you!

UPPER SCHOOL
Boarding and Day for boys 13 - 18
The Upper School provides a vibrant and stimulating environment in which every boy is encouraged to build upon his individual strengths, to surprise himself, to delight in achievement and, ultimately, to leave the School with his ambitions extended. At Bedford diversity does not mean dilution and, across the vast academic, cultural and sporting curriculum, boys develop enthusiasm and an appetite for learning. The happy result of our ethos is that excellence flourishes in all fields.
PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Boarding and Day for boys 7 - 13
The Preparatory School, which caters for 450 boys aged 7 to 13, is situated on the same campus as the Upper School and, while sharing a number of whole school facilities, is a self-contained unit, maintaining its own identity and character. The learning environment is thoughtfully tailored to the needs of younger boys and the atmosphere is busy, happy and productive.
This pursuit of excellence extends beyond the classroom. On the sports field and across our huge range of cultural and leisure activities, every boy has endless opportunities to discover his individual talents and is encouraged to set and pursue his personal goals.
BSSC
BSSC offers intensive English language and study skills preparation for up to 30 boys and girls aged 10-17 years. Courses are fully residential and are available during the academic year or as a Summer School. We are located on the estate of Bedford School and within 5 minutes walking distance of the town centre.
Pupils are taught in small groups of 5 or 6. Term-time courses last 10 weeks each and start in September, January and April. Pupils can come for one, two or three terms. We also offer Summer School courses and these take place in July and August.
BSSC also provides a placement service for any pupils wishing to go on to a boarding school in the UK on completion of their programme.
We are very proud of our former student Adam CJ Park who is cycling the Himalayas this summer. To learn more about his trip, and to sponsor him, go to http://www.cyclehimalayas.com/
BOARDING
Preparatory School Boarding
|
|
Eagle House, purpose-built to accommodate junior boarders, is situated in the heart of the campus. With its distinct family atmosphere, it provides comfortable living areas where our boys can relax and feel at home at the end of the School day.
Opened in 1993, Eagle House accommodates boarders in bright, spacious rooms with beds for 4, 5 or 6 boys, each room having en-suite facilities. The Housemaster and his wife are assisted by a matron, two resident tutors and a number of academic staff. Boys complete their homework, which is supervised and checked every evening, in the study room and each boy has his own study cubicle. The House also has a networked computer system with a radio networking capability to allow boys to link to the School computer system.
Recreational needs are well catered for by a large common room and a games room. In the music room, boys can practice the piano, the electronic keyboard or their own musical instruments. At the rear of the House the boys have access to the Preparatory School all-weather pitch.
The social life of boarders is very full. Visits, tours and outings are regularly organised and full boarders have the whole range of School facilities available to them at weekends. Each term there are two exeat weekends.
Weekly boarding is an option and the School also provides a "Day Plus" programme with a range of flexible boarding arrangements for Day Pupils.
Although a number of boarders live locally, the majority come from across the United Kingdom and overseas. There is an easy mix between boarders and the School’s day-boy population which makes for wide and varied friendships within the extended Bedford ‘family’.

All of our 6 senior boarding houses offer the best care for the individual. Each house functions broadly as a family unit with the Housemaster and his wife leading a team of people who are committed to the development of the boys in their care.
All of the boarding houses are well appointed with attractive and comfortable bedrooms and full recreational facilities including a common room, games room and extensive grounds. Whilst main meals are taken in the School’s dining halls, each house has its own kitchen where boys can make themselves snacks and drinks during the evenings. The houses are also networked to enable boys to make use of the School’s email system, intranet and of course, study using the internet.
The House Community thrives and develops through its involvement in House Singing, theatre visits, informal competitions, paintballing, plays, quizes, barbecues and celebrations. The well established work ethos, supervised preps (homework) and personal study allow each individual to work towards their academic goals.
We offer weekly boarding as an option and this is becoming increasingly popular: boys are able to take part in the full range of activities during the week while going home to their families each weekend. Full boarders attend Chapel on Sundays. There are two full weekend exeats per term when boys go home to their families or stay with their allocated guardians.
