Prospectus   Policies   Clubs   Our Classes

The Firs is a very friendly and caring school, which achieves high standards.  Our children are happy, polite and enjoy their learning.  The school values all stakeholders and has a very hard-working and committed team of staff who work extremely well together.

Our parents enjoy being involved in the school and are very supportive of all we do.  Our enthusiastic PTA organises a variety of activities, for both parents and children, throughout the year.

The school has a very popular 'Kid's Club', which provides care for children before and after school.  Children are also offered a wide variety of extra curricular experiences, e.g. choir, dance, recorders, ball skills, gardening, cross stitch etc.

The Local Area

The Firs is an active participant in the local community and makes good use of its surroundings to support and enhance the curriculum.  We have links with the Leonard Cheshire home, the Day Centre for the elderly and a number of local churches.

The Firs Lower School is situated in the historic market town of Ampthill and shares a very pleasant site with Alameda Middle School at the edge of woodlands.  There are two lower schools serving Ampthill - Russell Lower and The Firs.  The Firs takes its name from the nearby conservation woodlands and all our classes are named after trees.  Most of our pupils live in Ampthill, although the school also serves the hamlet of Millbrook and a number of our pupils live outside the catchment area.  All our parents have high expectations for their children and are very supportive of the school.  Pupils are admitted in September into the 4+ unit and remain with us until they leave us at the end of year 4, when most of the pupils move on to Alameda.  A small number move on to Woodlands Middle School in Flitwich or to one of the Harpur Trust schools in Bedford.  The local upper school, Redborne, is close by and all of the local schools in our Learning Community co-operate very closely and work together postively, in the best interests of all our children.

The Building

The school was built about 30 years ago and is in good repair.  It is in a very pleasant setting, with large playing fields bordered by woodlands.  The school has a 4+ unit with its own courtyard and outdoor play area.  The recent addition of a covered area has had a very positive impact on the outdoor play provision we can make in Reception.  There are two separate playground areas, (for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2) and an attractive courtyard area in the middle of the school.  The school is centrally placed with corridors leading off to the various classrooms and admin area.  An annex at the rear of the school site is used for music, drama, library and PSHCE sessions, as well as extra-curricular activities.  It is also the site used by our after school club.  The Firs has a computer suite with 15 computers, although the school plans to build a new 30 place computer suite, which will significantly enhance the quality of provision in this area.

School Goals

‘Working together to achieve our best.’

Everything we do is focused around our children. With this in mind, the school has agreed three goals, which are at the heart of what we want for our school:

The learning environment

To establish and maintain a caring, rich and stimulating environment, which maximises all opportunities for learning and ensures the goals of ‘Every Child Matters’ are at the centre of what the school does.

Future fit

To ensure that the best use is made of all the school’s resources- financial, material and human- to prepare the school for the future and to maximise children’s learning.

Community

To ensure the school works successfully and productively, in partnership with all stakeholders, for the benefit of the children at The Firs.

   School Aims

Derived from our long term goals, the Firs has agreed a set of aims which embody our vision for the school’s future:

                               The learning environment
• To create a safe, caring and supportive environment where everyone feels happy, secure, valued and encouraged and in which all stakeholders feel they can ask for help.
• To provide a broad, balanced and appropriately differentiated curriculum that excites and stimulates young minds and actively engages them in their learning.
• To enable children to develop skills and acquire knowledge through a wide variety of teaching and learning styles, recognising pupils’ individual needs, so that each child has the opportunity to attain his/her maximum potential.
• To help children to develop the thinking skills, the capacity to make decisions and the ability to evaluate their own progress and that of others, in order to become independent learners.
• To enable children to acquire the basic knowledge and skills they will need to achieve economic well being in the future.
• To foster positive attitudes towards learning as a lifelong experience in all stakeholders.
• To develop the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in a range of physical activities and enjoy them as part of a healthy lifestyle.
• To develop a climate where effort, achievement and excellence are expected and appreciated and where everyone strives to do their best in all fields of endeavour.
• To encourage children to be actively involved in the life of the school and in the wider global community to which they belong.
• To help children acquire a set of moral values and an awareness of the importance of being honest and being sensitive to those around them, so that they show care, courtesy and consideration for others, treating them as they would wish to be treated themselves.
• To foster the children’s interest in, respect for and involvement with the environment, developing ideas to care for and improve it.
• To arouse children’s curiosity, awe and wonder about the world in which we live.

 Future fit

• To maintain and build upon the high standards and reputation that the school has earned.
• To ensure the future financial security of the school through sound fiscal management and by following statutory and agreed budgetary practices.
• To make the most effective use of staff, continually looking for new and more productive ways of working to ensure: a healthy work-life balance; staff who are happy and motivated; enhanced learning experiences for children.
• To develop the knowledge and skills of all staff through the appropriate and effective use of continuing professional development.
• To develop an ‘e-confident’ school which ensures that children receive an education which takes account of the importance of ICT and enables them to recognise and make confident use of its potential in both school and in society. *
• To develop and maintain the school site, so it meets all the future needs of learners and provides all stakeholders with an effective, stimulating and attractive learning environment.

* an ‘e-confident’ school is one that uses ICT (computers and related technology) successfully and confidently

                                                                   Community
• To encourage positive, tolerant attitudes, and respect for the needs, traditions, beliefs and cultures of others, both in school and in the wider community.
• To encourage in all stakeholders, a sense of teamwork: being an important and valued part of the school community and feeling satisfaction and pride in belonging to it.
• To actively encourage all stakeholders to share and contribute to the school’s vision and aims.
• To make a positive contribution to the learning community to which we belong and to successfully access the benefits it offers to The Firs.
• To forge close and productive relationships between home, school and the local community.
