OUR SCHOOL
Gilbert Inglefield Middle school is situated on the outskirts of Leighton Buzzard, an expanding town on the edge of Bedfordshire. The County has a three tier system starting with Lower schools (5 - 8), middle schools (9 -13) and finally upper schools (14 - 18).
Our school is a middle school. Both key stages 2 and 3 are covered by our curriculum. In Bedfordshire there are primary schools but they are confined to Luton. We can provide our pupils with the caring and personal atmosphere of a primary classroom when they enter our school and later provide the specialist teaching and equipment needed to develop their skills and knowledge, ready for the move to one of the local upper schools.
Gilbert Inglefield school is named after Sir Gilbert Inglefield, once a Lord Mayor of London. The school was opened in 1972, originally as a secondary school. In 1976 the school became a middle school and has maintained this status since then.
Our school has a five class intake, which is continued throughout the next three years of schooling. There are 560 pupils currently attending our school, most of them living close to the school in its catchment area. There is an average of 28 pupils to each class.
Class groups are mixed ability but we do set children according to ability in Maths throughout the school. In English we have broad ability groups with the pupils who find the subject difficult in their own smaller class for the subject. In year 7 and 8 (key stage 3) classes are taught in broad ability groups for the academic subjects.
The school has specialist facilities for many subject areas. There are three science laboratories, one music block, a design room, an art room, a home economics room, 6 ICT areas with 6, 10, 15, 15, 15 and 30 systems installed on a network, a gym and a library, plus, of course, the usual classrooms for teaching in. Recently a brand new science/3D studies block has been opened, providing us with state of the art facilities. The school is well equipped to cater for the needs of a modern education system. Our school is a lively and thriving community of adults and pupils, working together to create a school rich in activity, learning and caring.
