Curriculum

Our Curriculum has been designed to meet the aims of the school. It takes into account a child's need for intellectual, aesthetic, emotional, social, physical, moral and spiritual development. All pupils will be encouraged and helped to develop their potential to the full. Detailed records are kept of each individual's progress and continual assessment is made of the child's abilities and standards of achievement. For further information relating to the Authority's provision of education, you are advised to send for 'General Information for Parents', available from the Education Department, County Hall, Bedford, MK42 9AP.

About our School

School Council

The Mary Bassett School Council was established in 2003. It is made up of a Chair, Vice-Chair and a Secretary and two representatives from each year group in the school. The year 4 children are elected to the posts of Chair, Vice-Chair and a Secretary. Prior to the elections for these posts being held the pupils keen to work for the school council will put their names forward and explain to the class why they would be good for the job. The year 4 class will then vote for the pupils they wish to take on the senior roles on the Council. Each year group will conduct its own elections to establish their own year group representatives. New representatives are elected at the beginning of each academic year . When the Council meets the Headteacher and the Year 4 teacher is present to support the pupils.

The School Council provides a forum for the children to air their views and opinions. The School Council can support projects already underway in school or initiate their own.

School Aims

The school aims to help children to become self-reliant, self-disciplined and responsible future members of society. As a staff, we endeavour to establish a friendly and encouraging style of relationship between teachers and pupils, based on mutual respect and trust. All children are treated as individuals within a happy community and are valued for their individual talents.

By the time they leave us, almost all pupils will have mastered the basic skills of reading, writing, mathematics and scientific investigations, as well as having encountered a wide experience of creative activities. Children are encouraged to be caring and considerate to all around them, and to conform to certain vital safety rules and standards of behaviour. Praise is widely used since children who feel they are succeeding will make even more effort.

Rewards

Each week we award a Merit Badge to a child in each class. This will reward notable effort in varied aspects of school life, not necessarily academic skills. There is also a Lunchtime Award for each class which recognises excellence in behaviour and good manners as notified by our Dinner Supervisors. A 'Courtesy and Kindness Cup' is also awarded to pupils demonstrating these important qualities.

We aim to encourage parents’ involvement in their child's learning and to develop the school as a crucial part of the local community.

It is our aim to provide a stimulating education in a caring environment
