Richmond Hill School is located within a quiet, established residential area on a prime site bordered by parkland yet within easy reach of the town centre.

We were designated a school for primary aged pupils with complex
difficulties in September 2000.

We welcome children and their parents into a small community that can offer a combination of education and care with high levels of staffing that enable us to meet the very special and individual needs of our pupils and their families. Our aim is to provide a warm and caring atmosphere that is a pre-requisite for successful learning.

The school has been the subject of an extensive building and refurbishment programme with 2 new classrooms added and areas designated for a soft play room, multi-sensory room, food technology room and library. Classrooms are fully resourced to cater for a range of needs and we have a facility specifically designated for pupils with autism.

Structure
Pupils are taught in 2 key stages, KS1 and KS2, although there may be mixed aged class groupings within these key stages. Staff have had extensive training to cater for pupils with a wide range of complex difficulties.

In each class there will be a class teacher supported by nursery nurses and learning support assistants. The ratio of staff to pupils being determined by the needs of the pupils.

We are also supported by an extensive network of agencies such as speech and language therapists, the hearing impaired service, the visually impaired service, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, music therapists, education psychologists, the social and communication difficulties service and those who specialise in English as a second language

Our Grounds

About 2 years ago we were lucky enough to be able to improve the play facilities around the school. We got this fantastic adventure climbing frame on the field which has something for everyone, tunnels, slides, climbing and a rope bridge.

In the play ground we have an 'A frame' net to climb over or crawl through. There is also a mound slide on the field and 3 swings dotted around. On top of all those things we  also have bikes, go-karts and scooters. Play time at Richmond Hill is NEVER dull!

Sensory Room

Our sensory room with a combination of lighting on is a very calm and relaxing room.

Although relaxing is important it has other benefits too. Some of the equipment can be operated with switch controls to enable cause and effect activities to take place or turn taking.

There is a voice activated light box which encourages children with limited verbal communication to make some noise and get a visual response back.

The room has a part that can be made completely dark so ultra violet lights can be used.

Some classes have made fluorescent numbers which under the ultra violet light really stand out enabling them to do maths lessons. If only my maths lessons were that much fun!

Soft Play

It's a soft and safe padded room filled with soft shapes to climb on, slide on, hide in, build with and roll on! It also has a ball pool to lay and relax in.
