Mrs Gill Ellyard
Our school, built in 1973, is located in a quiet residential area in Linslade, just outside Leighton Buzzard. It is set in lovely grounds with extensive play areas and a large playing field. We are particularly proud of our environmental area and the new covered play area for nursery children.
The Early Years unit has recently achieved Investors in Children through the Effective Early Learning initiative. Children are invited to start afternoon school in the term after they are 4, and progress through to full time school the term in which they are 5. In years 1 to 4, there are two classes in each year group, with a maximum of 30 pupils. We aim to meet the individual needs of all our children and run sessions for our gifted and talented children in addition to support groups for children who need extra assistance with learning or social issues.
The school is well resourced and ICT provision is good, with computers available in all classes in addition to our ITC suite. French teaching takes place in all four Key Stage 2 classes and the curriculum is also enriched with numerous visits, visiting artists and activities. We are taking part in the Healthy Schools initiative and expect to gain validation later this year. We manage our own kitchens and produce healthy and tasty school dinners with menus provided to all parents.
Although our children are working at above national and county averages, we have a real commitment to developing the whole child as an individual. This is reflected in our provision of allocated time for PSHCE and Circle time and a wide selection of extra curricular opportunities.
This web site will give you a flavour of our school, but you are warmly invited to visit us. Please make an appointment via the school office and I will be delighted to show you around and enable you to meet the children and staff.
I look forward to meeting you!

Our Vision
Here at Southcott Lower School our vision is for all our children to become confident, secure, caring individuals who achieve personal success and develop a love of learning. To achieve this we work closely with parents, governors and children.

We have a wide range of extra curricular activities available to enrich our children’s learning experiences. Some of these take place during the school day, such as visiting performers, the annual K’Nex Challenge and swimming lessons for year 4 children. In addition, there are a number of lunchtime and after school activities offered to the children.
Several activities such as pottery and Southcott Singers are held throughout the year. Outdoor sports and games are weather dependent and tend to take place over the summer and early autumn terms. Some clubs such as Christmas activities are held at the relevant time. Most of the activities are free of charge, but we do seek a contribution where there are materials used or an external teacher is involved.
We are constantly looking to extend the range of extra-curricular activities on offer. If you have a special interest and would like to help run a club, please contact the Activities Development Assistant via the school office.
About Our Clubs
After School Clubs Timetables
At Southcott Lower School we aim to support parents in their busy lives. We provide before and after school care clubs, and maintain strong links with local playgroups.
Early Birds Club Early Birds is a club run and managed by Southcott Lower School giving parents an opportunity to bring their children to school earlier than the usual 8.45am start. The club operates from 7.50am each morning and each session is charged at £1.50 whatever time your child arrives. The club is for any child who attends Southcott in the mornings, whether they are part or full-time and operates during term time.
After School Care Club Our after school care club runs each school day during term time between 3.30pm and 6pm. It is run by Bluebell Childcare Ltd and can be used on either a regular or ad-hoc basis, but children need to be officially registered to gain access. The cost is currently £1.40 per half hour, with snacks and packed teas available. Further details can be obtained contacting 07708 492361, or from the School Office.
Playgroups Southcott works closely with the local playgroups and welcomes visits from our youngest members of the community. Most of the local children attend either Bluebell Playgroup, which is based at Southcott Lower School but is independently run, or Southcott Playgroup which is based at the Community Centre in Bideford Green. Further details can be obtained from the School Office.
Extra-Curricular Clubs For details about our wide range of extra-curricular activities, please see Clubs and Activities.
