History
The history of the School dates back to 1698, when the Grey Coat Hospital was founded for the children of Westminster by eight citizens of that borough. Their intention was that it should prove "a nursery for loyal citizens, honest workers and solid Christians". It was granted a Charter by Queen Anne in 1706 under the name of The Royal Foundation of Queen Anne.

When, in 1894, the Governors decided to use part of the endowment to found a boarding school for girls at Caversham, it was named after her. The school emblem is a deep red rose, Queen Anne's favourite flower as legend has it, and Queen Anne's girls used to wear a cardinal red hooded cloak of the same colour until the ubiquitous fleece took over!

The school values its links with Westminster and with Grey Coat Hospital, and the triennial service at Westminster Abbey provides a stirring occasion for all members of our community to worship together.

Admissions
Entrance to the school is through the Common Entrance examinations at age 11, 12 or 13. If a girl is unable to sit Common Entrance, she may sit the School’s own examination papers. Further information on Common Entrance and past papers can be obtained from the Independent Schools' Examinations Board (ISEB) at www.iseb.co.uk.

Sixth Form Entrance
Offers of sixth form places are made during the academic year in which GCSEs are taken. The offer is conditional upon the entrance examination. Any girl gaining fewer than 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above would be advised not to embark on an Advanced Level course.

At Queen Anne's we nurture the enjoyment of learning. Using the full spectrum of learning resources from books to the internet, bringing in specialist experts, and visiting places of interest are just some of the ways that we bring relevance to learning.

We offer a broad curriculum, based on the National Curriculum, but enhanced and extended where appropriate.   The expertise and care given by both teaching and pastoral staff means that each girl at Queen Anne’s has the support, encouragement and advice that she needs at every stage of her education.

Curriculum
During her first three years at Queen Anne’s, a girl experiences an extremely broad curriculum ensuring she has the opportunity to discover a range of strengths and interests. Each girl is encouraged to pursue some of these interests outside the curriculum so that her school life goes well beyond a classroom-based programme.

During the crucial GCSE two-year period, there is plenty of opportunity for each girl to consider her choices post-GCSE, not only as a sixth form student but also her higher education options and career paths. We provide a programme of activities throughout the year so that careful consideration can be given to these important decisions.

For students embarking on the sixth form, there are exciting experiences and opportunities that lie ahead.  Academic work is the focus of the sixth form course; the demands are high and students quickly learn to manage their time in order to balance study and extra-curricular pursuits.

Resources and Facilities
From the highly qualified, trained staff to the ever-expanding range of learning and recreation facilities, Queen Anne’s offers a robust framework for the happy and fulfilling pursuit of excellence.

Our language laboratories, computing suites, and modern library are equipped with the latest technology; and our facilities for art, science and home economics are also of a very high standard. 

The Centenary Arts Centre and Morgan Sports Centre are just two centres of excellence at Queen Anne’s.  The drama and music departments add much to the life of everyone here; and similarly, sport plays a large part in the life of a Queen Anne’s girl.  Several of our girls play lacrosse for England, but whether playing for their country or just for fun, there are opportunities for all.

Scholarships
Queen Anne’s School offers a wide range of scholarships, which are open to internal and external candidates.  All scholarships are awarded for excellence whether in academic work, art, music or sport. 

The top scholarship of the year is valued at full tuition (ie two thirds of total fees) for each year the scholar is at Queen Anne's; other scholarships have a minimum value of £1000 per annum irrespective of income and a maximum value of half tuition fees. For one of these scholarships preference will be given to the daughters of clergy of the Church of England or of school teachers.

It is a condition of an award that all scholars will complete their sixth form education at Queen Anne's School.

Sixth Form Scholarships are also offered each year up to the value of half tuition fees and examinations are held at the school in November of the year preceding entry into the sixth form.

Extra-curricular Activities
When the bell signals the end of the day’s lessons, pupils at Queen Anne’s are far from ready to sit back and do nothing!  A rich and varied programme of clubs and activities is on offer and girls are encouraged to further explore their interests in music, performing, sports, or art.

Over the years the school also built a very successful tradition in public speaking, with our talented students winning international, as well as local, success in competitions.  Schemes such as Young Enterprise and the Duke of Edinburgh Award prove to be very popular with our girls, providing a wonderful opportunity to gain real-life knowledge and experience for their future careers.

 Whether they live a minute, a mile or a continent away, QAS girls and their parents opt for boarding for a cornucopia of reasons. Sometimes work commitments take parents away from home, sometimes the gridlocked roads make the journey from home to school a nightmare, but often, with so much going on at school, there is just not time to go home during the week!

Queen Anne's is predominantly a boarding school, but we do welcome day girls from the local environs who are an integrated part of our community and benefit from the excellent facilities that only a boarding school can provide.

Boarding at QAS
For any girl who comes to Queen Anne's as a boarder, a warm and caring environment is assured.  There are four boarding Houses and each is staffed by a resident Housemistress who is an expert in the care of young people.  Assistant Housemistresses, House tutors and Gap students are integral to the pastoral team, ensuring that there is always somebody available for each girl.

The strong sense of community and respect for each other that exists in both the boarding and day Houses at the school, encourages enthusiastic loyalty and much pride when a girl represents her House in one of the many inter-House competitions.

Sixth Form Life
The Sixth Form is one of the most challenging and potentially fulfilling parts of a young person’s education and for senior students at Queen Anne’s, there is greater independence - and responsibility - in determining the course of their studies and future careers.  Learning to take control of their own lives and develop good relationships with people around them, Sixth Form students at Queen Anne’s are very much the leaders of the school, making a valuable contribution and learning to work as part of a team, co-operating with one another and with staff.

These two years will bring exciting opportunities and we encourage students to enjoy and make the most of this important phase of their lives.

Having Fun
No matter how busy the school timetable may be, girls at Queen Anne’s always make time to have some fun with their friends.  From organised trips to London’s West End, adventure theme parks or the cinema, to video and pizza evenings, discos or karaoke parties in the Houses, the social calendar for a QAS girl can be a hectic one!

Having fun at Queen Anne’s also extends to the many fundraising events that the girls host throughout the year.  Thousands of pounds have been raised for local and national charities through the creative and enthusiastic ideas that the girls have devised and managed.
