St. John's is very much a Church School in its character and identity. Not only is most of the "Church" part of the building available to the school during the week, but also many Church members, clergy and lay, are actively involved in school life.

On Sundays the Church Family gathers for worship in the Church whilst the children and young people's groups meet in the school. All are welcome to join us at 10.30am or 6.30pm. There are also midweek meetings for "parents and toddlers", Cubs & Scouts, and older members of the community. So it is that St. John's is a place for learning, care and prayer throughout the week.

For a long time the Church has sought to serve the community. Schools were first built at the old St. John's and St. Stephen's in 1854 & 1865. We continue in that long tradition in a fast changing world. If we can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact me or another member of the church.

St. John's Foundation Stage 1 is a 30 place (part-time) unit staffed by a qualified teacher, 1 qualified N.N.E.B and 1 LSA. Our FS1 provides a well ordered environment run by a trained and committed staff with whom children can form stable relationships. Children are offered opportunities to develop and build upon their own skills and attitudes and to acquire a range of concepts through first hand experience.

Our FS1 is the starting point of a planned curriculum. We follow a structured curriculum, which covers the six areas of learning experiences.
These are: -

  •  Personal, social and emotional development.
  • Language and literacy.
  • Mathematical development.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world.
  • Physical development.
  • Creative development.

This prepares children fully for the National Curriculum on entry into school. Each term, we follow topic-based activities which are chosen to fit in with the school plan. 

St John's Parents, Teachers and Friends Association has, over the years, raised considerable amounts of money for a variety of projects in school. These have included, for example, fundraising to send a pupil with cerebral palsy to the Peto Institute in Hungary for six months, designing and planting the Peaceful Garden in the millennium year and commissioning new playground paintings. PTFA events include very popular Christmas Markets, Summer Fetes, regular non-uniform days and cake sales.

PRESS RELEASE

St John's CE Primary School in East Reading was inspected by a team of three Ofsted Inspectors and an HMI on 10th and 11th October. As St John's CE Primary School is a church aided school, this inspection was followed by a second (Section 48 SIAS) inspection during the following week.
Both inspections found the school to be "outstanding" in all aspects.

The report said:

"This is an outstanding school. Pupils of all backgrounds and abilities make very good progress and achieve highly. There is an excellent climate for learning because the curriculum is exciting and motivates the pupils to work hard and do their best. It reflects the social and cultural breadth of the communities served by the school and prepares children very well for life in a multi-ethnic society. Pupils are happy and secure; they are confident that adults take very good care of them. "We are like a big team of people who work together and look after each other" observed one pupil."

 "The excellent quality of leadership and management is reflected in the considerable improvement in standards since the last inspection and the thorough approach that has been taken in tackling the issues that were raised. Under the purposeful leadership of the Headteacher the school evaluates its performance with rigour but is modest when forming overall judgements. Even so, Headteacher, staff and governors demonstrate an excellent capacity to drive forward continuing improvement. The school provides very good value for money."

The school was evaluated under six headings:

1.Achievement and standards
These were excellent overall.
2.Personal Development and Well-Being
The Inspectors found these to be outstanding.
"Pupils" spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding. Behaviour is exemplary because pupils respond well to teachers" high expectations and clear behaviour guidelines."
3.Teaching and Learning
These were evaluated as good overall with some excellent elements.
4.Curriculum and other activities
Inspectors found that "Pupils benefit from an excellent range of curricular experiences that extends well beyond national requirements."
5.Care, support and guidance were also found to be outstanding, addressing the needs of all pupils effectively.
6.Leadership and Management are outstanding. In all the school"s activities the Headteacher and her deputy promote a distinctive thread of care, support and encouragement of pupils, teacher, parents and governors. Cultural integration is very strong, because of the very clear commitment to inclusion where adults and pupils from this diverse community treat each other with dignity and respect.

Headteacher Maggie Donaldson, said:
"It is good to see our strong and effective partnership of children, staff, parents and governors endorsed so positively by Ofsted."

Chair of Governors David Langshaw, said:
"It is reassuring that the success of our School as a place of all-round learning is recognised by means other than simple league tables and statistics".

Healthy Schools
During 2001/2002 St John's was awarded all 3 Healthy School Awards - Bronze, Silver and Gold! This was achieved due to the fact that we were already working at Gold level when we decided to apply for the award.

To help bring together our applications, a working party of children and staff was set up to prepare the files and help to promote further healthy lifestyle issues throughout our school. Much of this work was already part of the fabric and makeup of St John's and continues to be part of what we are and do. The group continues to meet and promote healthy school issues as being forward thinking and innovative and aids the well being of all at St John's.
 
 
Gold Artsmark
St John"s was awarded a Gold Artsmark on first application for this prestigious award. It celebrated the wide diversity of the arts across the school as well as the talent of our pupils and their parents!
 
St John"s also holds the Investors in People and Quality Mark Awards.
 


Helping your child

In School

Many parents like to help in school and we encourage this. Every parent has skills and expertise to offer in the way of help and the children love to see you in school. There are lots of different things to do and we are happy to explain what would help

At Home

New children may find the demands of school tiring. A relaxing time after school and an early bedtime help.

Children are encouraged to bring home books and we give all children homework tasks. Parents can encourage their children to form good work habits by showing an interest in these tasks. Teachers are happy to discuss work and if a child needs extra help a programme can be worked out between teacher and parent.


School Grounds Day

We have an active Green Team, which has planned and run the School Grounds Day since 1998. Over the years the school grounds have been extensively developed to provide a peaceful and interesting environment for the school and local community. Each year, every person in the school plants a sunflower seed so that on our return to school in September, we enter a forest of sunflowers: a good welcome back to the new academic year.

Our most recent attraction has been the addition of a playground painting, which covers half of our tarmac surface with a wonderful imaginative world of space and castles, treasure and fantasy. This project was done in conjunction with Reading College by one of our parents. Workshops were held so that groups of children were able to add their ideas to the artwork, which forms the basis for imaginative play and structured games.

Focus Week

Each Summer Term we set aside a week when we 'focus' on a particular area of the curriculum: timetables are suspended and we launch ourselves into the theme of the week.
Over the years our focus weeks have covered DT, Science, Our Outside Classroom, Spirituality and last year the theme was Citizenship. Visiting speakers, artists in residence and school trips have all contributed to the success of these weeks.


Book Week

This is traditionally held near the half term in the autumn and again is based around a theme. 


Clubs/Activities



  • Extra-Curricular Activities
    We have a range of extra-curricular and lunchtime clubs which take place during the academic year:
    Computer Club, Dance Club, Football Lunchtime Club, Football After School, Latin Club, Music Club, Cycling Proficiency, English Speaking Board, Chinese Club, Chess Club, Japanese Club, Kwik Cricket, Athletics, Tag Rugby & Badminton Clubs.

  • Sports and Games
    In addition to our regular timetabled PE and Games lessons we have extra football at a lunchtime and after school, run by Reading Football Club.
    Our newly established cricket team has now begun to play matches with other schools. We also have our traditional Sports Days in June and host a local football tournament every summer.
    Our entrants in the School Swimming Gala have improved year on year and in addition we have benefited from coaching sessions with London Irish Rugby Club, Reading Rockets Basketball Club, a Hockey Club and a Tennis Club.

Aims of Curriculum
