Welcome back to a new school year at Ashton Vale.
This term is always busy, we have harvest and Christmas to look forward to as well as studying the Victorians across the school.
The netball season will be starting at the end of September and also a range of other clubs for children to join.

| Ashton Vale is situated in a quiet area of Ashton, South Bristol, and has splendid views of the Ashton Court Estate and Clifton Suspension Bridge. It comprises of a mix of owner occupied 1930s terrace and semi-detached houses with post war council house accommodation. The area is on the edge of the city of Bristol, is quiet and has the feel of a village atmosphere about it. Many parents and grandparents attended the school, and there is a well developed sense of community. |
| The school was built in 1949, on a spacious campus with 5 general classrooms and a number of small work areas. It has a large hall, kitchen and an I.C.T. suite which was added in April 2000. As you can see the school environment is very attractive. We have mature trees, flower beds, a willow structure, wildlife area with pond, a sensory/music trail, a vegetable garden, two playgrounds, a playing field and adventure playground. |

We were previously an infant school with children transferring to other primary schools at the age of 8. Since 1995, the school has catered for the full primary age range, with pupils 4-11 years of age. The staffing consists of; head, deputy, 4 full-time teachers and 2 job share teachers. There are 8 learning support assistants (7 part-time and 1 full-time,) a secretary, 2 school meal supervisors and a caretaker. The ethos of the school arises from a feeling of partnership, with close co-operation between pupils, staff, parents, governors, LEA and members of the community.

The school is organised into a reception and year 1 class, a year 1/2 class, a year 2/3 class, a year 4/5 class and a year 5/6 class. Each mixed age class takes an age range of about 18 months, spanning 2 year groups, with totals varying between 25 and 32 children. The curriculum plan is divided into 2 cyclic years, A and B, which cover all of the Curriculum programmes of study, split into the DfEE units of learning. The whole school follows the same cycle, A or B, at any one time.
The school is a lively place for children. They are encouraged to take an active role in their learning, taking more and more responsibility as they move up through the school. There are high expectations of academic, social and moral achievement, while attending to individuals who need extra support and encouragement to fulfill their potential. There is an active school council. Children are encouraged to develop physical, artistic and creative talents through the curriculum and a range of extra curricular activities, using staff and parental support. |

In 2003 and again in 2006, we were awarded the Silver Artsmark by the Arts Council for our commitment to the Arts.
We have many visitors and trips which support our Arts curriculum. We are very proud of the standard achieved by children in dance, music, drama, design, art and technology.
We also have a week dedicated to the Arts. This is normally held in June. |

The Bristol Standard
We are very proud to have been awarded the Bristol Standard again (Nov 2006) for our Early Years education.
The Early Years team are dedicated to ensuring the ongoing development of our Foundation Stage curriculum.
We have a large, well resourced indoor classroom as well as an outdoor classroom and interactive learning area allowing us to facilitate the developing child.
We work in close partnership with the local nursery and parents so that children feel happy, secure and sucessful. |

The Bristol Inclusion Standard
In October 2006 we were awarded the
Bristol Inclusion Standard.
This is for the work we do in school to include
all children and adults. It recognises our work in
special educational needs, anti bullying, disability inclusion,
anti racism and our multi cultural inclusive curriculum. |

Read a Million Words Champion School
For the academic year 2006 to 2007 we have been chosen as a Read A Million Words Champion School.
We shall be holding exciting reading and writing events and organising cross curricular opportunities to extend the children's skills.
We shall also welcome visitors to school for such events as poetry workshops and theatre productions. |

At the end of November 2003, we were recognised in the League Tables as the 37th most improved school in the country.
We are constantly evaluating our practise to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum, focused on raising standards in all areas. |
| Word has spread fast about the Infant Department's amazing Write Dance sessions, where children's handwriting is improved by practising their fine and gross motor skills to music. Our achievements were acknowledged when Mrs Bale (Class 1 teacher and Literacy Coordinator) was recently asked to write a piece about our sessions for the Bristol SEN Newsletter. We have also recieved 3 visiting teachers from a school in Solihull, who were so impressed that they are embarking upon Write Dance sessions themselves. |

Quality Mark 1 and 2
On Monday 29th March 2004 we were assessed by The Basic Skills Agency for The Quality Mark.
The Basic Skills Agency is a national organisation which supports basic skills, (literacy and numeracy).
We are all very pleased to have been successful in our application for the Quality Mark which shows that all children, regardless of ability, can succeed.
We will be celebrating next term when our plaque arrives.
In June 2007 we were awarded with The Quality Mark 2 which is in recognition of continual improvement in basic skills across the whole school. This plaque now takes pride of place next to our Quality Mark 1. |

Meeting the Mayor
Ashton Vale children were invited to meet the Mayor on the 4th November in recognition for our efforts on the Big Walk to School in aid of the British Heart Foundation. We were awarded a parachute as our prize. Four children accompanied Ms Champeney to the City Hall to receive it. |

The Department for Education and Skills have awarded Ashton Vale with the Activemark 2006.
This rewards exceptional delivery of the National Sport Strategy.
The children at Ashton Vale have at least 2 dedicated P.E. lessons a week. The playground is a 'Zone Parc' with many sporting activities on offer at lunch times and we also run a range of sports' clubs after school. |

In recognition of the work we do to promote a sustainable lifestyle we have been awarded the Bronze certificate from Eco Schools.
At Ashton Vale we create our own compost for our vegetable garden. We also recycle all our waste paper and spend time greening the school grounds.
The children are aware of energy waste and the need to conserve electricity and oil. |

Healthy Schools
In July 2007 we were awarded Healthy Schools Status. This is in recognition of our work on healthy eating, excercise, healthy minds and healthy bodies.
The award was presented at a special healthy picnic at Bristol Zoo and supports other initiatives such as inclusion and Eco Schools. | |
