Nestled in the beautiful, natural surroundings of the Mendip countryside and located at the heart of the village, East Harptree Primary is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England School serving the families of East and West Harptree. Our aim is to provide the best of education in the caring, supportive atmosphere of a small village primary school and we strive to create an environment that encourages confident and enquiring children to participate fully in the world around them.
On these pages you'll find lots of information about the school, our people and the wide range of exciting activities going on in the school and local community throughout the year. We hope you find it interesting and helpful. If you have any questions you can contact us or why not come and visit and see the school in action! |

Our school was founded in 1653, a gift by the local Lord of the Manor Sir John Newton. Today it is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England School serving the families of East and West Harptree. Our aim has always been to provide the best of education in the caring, supportive atmosphere of a small village primary school. |
The school is housed in an attractive, late Victorian buildling, but inside we have all the educational equipment and resources to be found in the most modern primary school. Much additional equipment is provided through the generous efforts of the Friends of the School.
However, the resource of which we are most pround is the committed human resource: the teachers, ancillary staff, parents and Governors, who all work and co-operate for the exclusive benefit of the children. |

The main function of the school is to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. At East Harptree, our aim is to create an environment that encourages confident and enquiring children to participate fully in the world around them. Within the Christian Foundation of the school we aim to foster a caring concern for others and a respect for the individual. Our purpose is to develop a moral, social and spiritual awareness in children and to give them self confidence and a pride in their achievements and encourage them to develop their full potential.
Children learn by example, by discussion and self-evaluation. They learn through praise, encouragement and activities based on first-hand experience; to support this learning experience, we stongly encourage independent thinking. The Governing Body's full statement of curriculum aims, together with the Eduaction Authority's statement of curriculum policy can be seen at the school.
The resource of which we are most proud is the committed human resource: the teachers, ancillary staff, parents, Governors and Friends of the School, who all work and co-operate for the exclusive benefit of the children.
Music is an important part of our school life and we aim to foster enjoyment and appreciation of all kinds of music. There are thriving recorder groups and any child may begin recorder lessons from the beginning of Year 3.
Violin flute clarinet, guitar and saxophone tuition is available to children in Year 4 and above. It is given by specialist peripatetic teachers and there is a charge for lessons. |

Our other clubs include French Club, Netball Club, Football Club and Environment Club. In 2005 the Environment Club won a competition to design a mural for Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust. We came first out of about 60 entries. You can see the mural in the Education Centre at Slimbridge.
