Welcome to our new website.

Our school was built about 120 years ago and is situated in Central Bristol (near the Suspension Bridge). It is a charming Victorian building with a very welcoming atmosphere. The staff, children,parents and governors work together in a positive way.

We are within walking distance of many of Bristol's attractions including the Museum, Old Vic Theatre and @Bristol. We use these resources and more to enrich the children's experiences thereby making learning exciting and memorable.

Our school vision statement "Learning to bring out the best in Everyone" encompasses what we are trying to achieve at Hotwells Primary School. We promote high achievement and a love of learning so that each child will flourish in this ethos of support, challence and encouragement to succeed. Our aim is that all children at Hotwells will enjoy the richness of their learning and that their primary school experience will be happy and memorable ones.

Our incredibly talented and innovative staff enjoy working as a team and provide opportunities for every child to succeeed through experiencing quality learning in a stimulating environment. We enjoy working closely with parents and Governors to provide the very best resources to support children's learning across the curriculum, including our recently installed interactive whiteboards in every classroom. Children are able to work independently and collaboratively developing an understanding of themselves as learners so that they not only know what they are learning but also how they are learning. Elli

Our policy of Positive Behaviour Management ensures that children are able to learn in a calm and well-managed environment which builds their confidence and self esteem so that they are able to achieve their best. The important thing is that teachers can teach so that children can learn.

We are proud of all that we have achieved thus far and can assure you that we will continue to strive to provide the highest quality education for all our pupils.

We welcome visitors, please ring the school office to arrange an appointment.

You can contact us on 0117 9030044 or email us on hotwells_p@bristol-city.gov.uk.

PTA

Hotwells Primary School Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) formerly known as the HPSA

Who are we? Anyone who has a child at Hotwells Primary School is automatically a member of the PTA as are all the teachers. This means that everyone's input is welcome.

What are we for?

* To support the staff by assisting with the everyday life of the school such as helping with swimming, reading, school trips and gardening.

* To organise social events for the children, staff and parents such as school fairs, discos, coffee mornings and quiz nights. All of these events help us to maintain a sense of community within our school.

* Fundraising - We raise money to enhance the education for our children. For example we provided £5,000 to buy new books for the school library.

* To provide educational input where we can - enriching the curriculum through the sharing of expertise. E.g. parent volunteers helped during Science Week and Big Food Week.

If you would like to get involved email us with 'add me to your mailing list' in the subject line and your child's name and class in the body text. We'll send you details of all forthcoming PTA meetings and the subsequent minutes of those meetings.

PTA meetings are informal and everyone is welcome. If you would like to talk about PTA issues but can't make the PTA meetings, do please speak to your class rep who will be able to act as your link.

Our amphitheatre provides an outside stage for Drama lessons and a lovely shady area for play on dry sunny days.

Our dining hall is a bright and welcoming area for children to eat hot school dinners. Tables are always enhanced by cut flowers courtesy of one of our lunchtime staff. Menu School dinners are £1.75 per day payable in advance.

All of our classrooms are spacious and stimulating learning environments. Displays support and enhance children's learning.

Our Nursery classroom space is a wonderfully inspiring and spacious environment for our 26 Nursery children. They also regularly access our outside spaces and Hall for their 'physical' play.

We have recently refurbished and restocked our school Library. Children borrow books regularly. Library Club meets on Wednesday lunchtimes and is organised by our Year 6 librarians.

We have a flourishing link with Asaba Primary school in Masindi, Uganda.

ICT is well resourced and enriches teaching and learing in all subjects across the whole school. The children benefit greatly from a fantastic computer suite with networked computers and also regularly visit the City Learning Centre to use their specialist IT equipment.

Garden for Life

*See our Garden for Life now*

A group of enthusiastic parents are working to support Jeremy Leicester our Reception teacher in constructing a 'Garden for Life'. Teachers:Celia Jenkins and Nicola Levison (2.5 days each)

The school day begins at 8.50am and finishes at 3.30pm. Lunchtime is 12.00-1.10pm.

Year 5 is a very important year in Key Stage 2 as it prepares children for Year 6 (their final year in Primary School) and builds on the curriculum covered from Years 3&4. In Literacy the focus is on developing age appropriate skills in the three areas of reading, writing and speaking & listening. In Numeracy the focus is on developing age appropriate skills in the areas of number, shape & space, data handling, problem solving and measure. It is essential that children are extending their learning at home by reading on a daily basis and ensuring that they have a thorough knowledge of all the times tables, up to x 12. Throughout Year 5 children should be becoming more independent in their learning (e.g. doing homework unsupported) and developing organisation skills & life skills in preparation for secondary school.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Supporting your child to become as independent as possible in their learning for sustained periods of time.

TOPIC CYCLE/Timetable for the year:

Parental input is vital as this is what brings each topic to life. Please help your child to select things to bring in and display in our classroom. Let us know if you have any relevant experience that can be shared with the class, or any great ideas for school trips, or visits to class.

COMMUNICATION

If you have any questions regarding your class please email us writing 'Class x query' in the subject box.

What to do if your child is ill.

Please either telephone the office on the morning of the illness. For a prolonged period of illness - 3 days or more - please call the office to let us know what is happening.

What to do if someone else is collecting your child

Please telephone the office (0117 9030044) to ask them to send a message to your child.

Complaints/concerns

Your first point of contact to discuss any issues or concerns about your child is the class teacher. Please feel free to come into the classroom and make and appointment either before or after school

Class reps

There are usually two self-appointed reps in each year. The rep position will be rotated around all interested parents and change each September. Class reps will be able to help you with information about the school in general and they will act as a central point for communication between the class teacher, the PTA and the parents. If you would like to be a class rep click here or attend one of the PTA meetings.

Volunteering for help - how it works and who to approach

We believe that the children benefit enormously from having the support of enthusiastic adults. If you feel you can become a regular volunteer in our class we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact your class teacher or class rep.

You can support us by:

* Hearing readers

* Taking a small group

* Supervising an area of the classroom

* Helping children change their books in the library

* Making resources

* Putting up a display

* Sharing a particular skill
