Education should not be a drudge. It should be an exciting experience. Our ethos is based firmly on the over-riding aim to provide a stimulating environment in which children can develop a love of learning, and see it as a pleasure rather than a chore to be endured. We are constantly investigating different ways of providing this.

The structure of the school, and our small classes, allow us to provide the care and attention that each child needs to develop individual areas of talent, and to enjoy the confidence that success breeds. To that end we offer a broad-based curriculum and a variety of after-school activities.

We seek to provide a happy environment. The able child will not be happy unless challenged, and the less able child will not be happy unless well supported and encouraged. It is a natural blend of a caring, family atmosphere and a sense of purpose.

We are the junior department of Battle Abbey School. The vast majority of our pupils gain automatic entry to the senior school, which shares our fundamental philosophy of education and justifiably boasts excellent examination results. We are proud of our school and consider that every day should be an Open Day – an opportunity for prospective parents and pupils to visit us, and see for themselves how a normal day runs. We extend a warm welcome to you.

Extra Curricular Activities

Academic results are not the only measure of a good education. We believe in a rounded education and offer many opportunities outside of the classroom for growth, fun and development. Every evening after school there are activities which include sport practice, the Choir, the Concert Band, BasJazz, singing and instrumental lessons, the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, ATC, horse riding, dance, gymnastics, play rehearsals, swimming, speech and drama.
These activities are available for day pupils and boarders alike but extra activities are laid on for the boarders - cookery club, shopping excursions, cinema trips, bowling, walks and much else.

NURSERY

The Nursery Department comprises a Kindergarten and Reception class. The Kindergarten is housed in its own newly equipped building. This department is run by full-time, experienced and well-trained staff.

When can I start?
You can enter the Preparatory school in the Nursery Department when you are two and a half and ‘dry’. The sessions in the kindergarten are very flexible, designed to ease children into the routines of school life. By Reception, at the age of 4, children confidently stay each day until 3.30pm. Emphasis is placed on the early acquisition of essential literacy and numeracy skills and children enjoy a wide range of other activities, investigative, creative, and physical.

FACILITIES AND BOARDING

The Prep School site is in Bexhill on Sea, a short drive from Battle, where it is housed in a large Edwardian building with bright, spacious classrooms, an attractive dining hall and a purpose built hall / gymnasium. It has an impressive IT suite with the latest technology and computers in every classroom.

Set in beautiful grounds, to the rear of the building there is a large playground area with a range of adventure playground apparatus. To the side of the building there is a large sports field and a new astro turf pitch.. Beyond that is a splendid 25 metre indoor heated swimming pool. So you can see that, although we are a small school, our facilities are impressive!

Yes! We have a Junior boarding house, Westnedge, which stands across the Abbey grounds, next to the Headteacher’s family home. It offers well-staffed care and home comforts. You can be a full boarder, a weekly boarder or enjoy occasional boarding.

SIXTH FORM

All pupils benefit from the holistic approach to education on offer here. Our children develop as part of the school family and as individuals. They become confident young adults with a high level of social skills, aware of the importance of good conduct. They learn the rewards that are the result of hard work both in and out of the classroom. They learn to serve and think of others.

There are are eighteen different A and AS courses to choose from. We expect that potential Sixth Formers have a minimum of six passes at grade C or above and will have achieved a B grade at GCSE in their chosen subjects.

Courses available are:
English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, German, History, Geography, I.T., Art, Textiles, Art History, Ph Ed, Music, Business Studies.
