Beacon Community College Sixth Form provides a very wide range of educational opportunities throughout year 12 and 13, and a tremendous number of extra curricular activities take place. Each student belongs to a tutor group of approximately 18 students, split into year groups. The tutor supports each student through fortnightly tutorials, were academic and pastoral support is provided.
The vast majority of students at Beacon are following A/AS courses. On the whole students take three A levels and one AS course, a small number take two A levels and 2 AS levels, a few take four A levels. Beacon has possibly the widest range of courses on offer in any state school sixth form in East Sussex. Our curriculum also offers an increasing number of level 2 courses (1 year in length) in the form of BTEC courses and GCSE Maths and English. Students are also able to opt into Adult Education provision which further widens the curriculum offer. Students can combine subjects in a wide variety of ways. Students can choose to follow all Science, Art/Humanities subjects whilst others choose subjects from different areas to construct a programme which suits their own personal needs.
For students following 1 year programmes we have a growing range of subjects to choose from. BTEC Sport has been extremely popular, along with our sporting Academies and CSLA. Student Apprenticeship scheme has been introduced for September 2005 to expand choice even further. We hope the courses allow time for individuals to mature, taste success and progress onto either level 3 courses and or employment/training.
Careers guidance is included for every student in year 12 and there is a wide range of resources available as well as a school based Connexions PA. Mr Barratt (Senior Sixth Form Tutor) works very closely with tutors and teaching staff, ensuring each student receives individual support and guidance.
Beacon has excellent sporting facilities. In addition to PE/Sports Studies/BTEC courses and CSLA, many students take part in a wide range of other sporting activities, such as trampolining and dance. The sixth form via its academies runs competitive teams in football, rugby, golf and netball.
Students enjoy the use of their common room, study facilities as well as the sixth form canteen. The sixth form has an effective committee that organises social and charity events. Students at Beacon have the opportunity to go on a large number of residential fieldtrips to places such as New York and the Gambia.
We are justly proud of the range of opportunities available to students, as well as the quality of education that we believe that we provide.
