MISSION STATEMENT

ETHOS

Little Ridge is a school that values each child as an individual, encouraging all pupils to reach their full potential.

We strive to create a happy, safe and caring environment in which children are encouraged to be courteous and respectful.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Governors and staff have agreed that the basic intention of the school should be to help EACH CHILD realise its maximum potential.

Our aims will be to:

Create a happy and busy school environment in which we:

  1. Help children learn that courtesy, good manners and consideration for others are very important qualities.
  2. Help children to become independent learners, to develop lively, enquiring minds, to question and argue rationally and to communicate clearly and confidently.
  3. Encourage children to acquire skills and knowledge relevant to a rapidly changing society.
  4. Ensure equal curricular opportunity for boys and girls.
  5. Encourage an enjoyment of reading, a command of basic English and a desire to write fluently and legibly.
  6. Develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics through enjoyment and understanding, as well as the acquisition of skills.
  7. Develop the capacity to solve problems.
  8. Encourage scientific and technological curiosity.
  9. Awaken awareness of the world around us through project-type environmental, historical and geographical studies.
  10. Instil respect for moral and religious values in a multi-cultural society.
  11. Acquire skills in art, drama, music and craft.
  12. Develop physical co-ordination and agility through physical activities, gymnastics, recreational games, swimming and movement.
  13. Provide opportunity for close liaison between school and parents.
  14. Expect that all children will play an active and full part in every aspect of school life.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE UNIT

Attached to Little Ridge Community School are an Infant and Junior Speech and Language Unit.

They provide intensive help for children with severe speech and/or language impairment and enable them to access a broad and balanced curriculum.

The local education authority E.S.C.C and the local health trust presently jointly funds them.

Each Unit has eight places.

All children in the Units have statements of S.E.N. specifying a primary speech and language impairment.

Staffing

Both units have a full time teacher and a full time general assistant. A speech and language therapist (SALT) is attached to each unit and works in the unit for half a week.

Teaching

The units provide dedicated intensive speech and language therapy and specialist teaching in a total language environment.

The unit philosophy is that the pupils’ educational needs should be met in as normal an educational setting as possible. This helps to develop the pupils’ emotional and social behaviour by encouraging peer group interaction with mainstream children.

Consequently the units follow the agreed Teaching and Learning Policy and Curricular policies of the school and the children are included as much as possible compatible with their educational needs.

The aim is for the children to be able to return to their own local school as soon as possible.
