Attached to Little Ridge Community School are an Infant and Junior Speech and Language Unit.
They provide intensive help for children with severe speech and/or language impairment and enable them to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
The local education authority E.S.C.C and the local health trust presently jointly funds them.
Each Unit has eight places.
All children in the Units have statements of S.E.N. specifying a primary speech and language impairment.
Staffing
Both units have a full time teacher and a full time general assistant. A speech and language therapist (SALT) is attached to each unit and works in the unit for half a week.
Teaching
The units provide dedicated intensive speech and language therapy and specialist teaching in a total language environment.
The unit philosophy is that the pupils’ educational needs should be met in as normal an educational setting as possible. This helps to develop the pupils’ emotional and social behaviour by encouraging peer group interaction with mainstream children.
Consequently the units follow the agreed Teaching and Learning Policy and Curricular policies of the school and the children are included as much as possible compatible with their educational needs.
The aim is for the children to be able to return to their own local school as soon as possible. |
