Patcham House is a small, secondary special needs school. It is situated in Patcham Village at the edge of the South Downs on the outskirts of Brighton.
The school caters for children presenting a wide range of special needs which includes pupils with a physical disability or serious medical condition; children who are regarded as being emotionally fragile including a small but growing number of children with severe psychiatric problems; some pupils who have Asperger's syndrome and a group of children who have been non-attending or who are school phobic.
The pupils fall within "normal" ranges of ability with most being of "low average" ability. Some pupils have specific learning difficulties and a few pupils have a moderate learning difficulty. They come from a wide area of East and West Sussex but mainly from Brighton and Hove. There has been a distinct shift recently away from catering for pupils with physical disabilities and medical conditions with a greater emphasis on those with the other SEN indicated.
The school is small, catering for up to 60 pupils aged 11 - 16. There is a comparatively large staff of 35, including 12 teaching staff and 13 support staff. In order to ensure breadth of curriculum at all Key Stages the school has appointed a high proportion of part-time specialist teachers, most of whom have come from a mainstream background.
All pupils follow the National Curriculum up to and including G.C.S.E. in English, English literature, maths, science, French, humanities, design/technology, art, music and human physiology and health. When G.C.S.E. is not appropriate, they are able to take Entry Levels in English, maths, science, French and design technology.

Holidays should not be taken during term time as this can affect a child's progress. A maximum of 10 days can be authorised in any school year. - Good pastoral, tutor group system. Pupils have form tutor and also support staff member attached to their form.
- Individual senior leaders have clear responsibilities for attendance, behaviour, Child Protection, Looked after Children, homework, SEN, co-ordinating work with therapists. Policies and procedures for these areas are also clear.
- Good procedures for working with parents and good links made with families.

- House system used to reward children for both class learning and mixed age learning.

- Appropriate times for whole school to meet eg assemblies, collective worship, Sports Days.
