Vermuyden School

Vermuyden School wants to work with the local community to help all of our young people to do their best while they are at school and to become successful, independent adults.

We believe that they will achieve this if we help and encourage them to:

  • be good learners who make the most of their different talents
  • gain the best possible qualifications and skills to prepare them for the world of work
  • face their future with confidence, ambition and optimism
  • develop values and beliefs which will help them to live full and healthy lives
  • care about others and make a positive contribution to society

The Schools Motto is "Alta Pete : Aim Higher"

At Vermuyden School, we aim to provide the best possible education for all students so that they can "be the best they can".   Students have  different strengths and weaknesses.   Some are academically gifted, some find some school work difficult.   Some excel in Sport or in Music or in Drama.  We will try to help each student make the best possible progress.

We are very proud of this school.  The students are very smart in their uniform.  They are pleasant and well-behaved.  Our examination results have improved over the past few years and were the best ever in 2006.  Key Stage 3 results have been at, or very close to, national levels for four years, and have risen each year and are showing a good added value: this is a big improvement.   There is great success at KS4 with 55% of students achieving 5+ A*-C grades (this is 10% above target and shows outstanding added value) , 94% gaining 5+A*-G and 99% students gaining at least one GCSE (both the last two above the national average).  However, we think that our students are capable of better than this: the staff are working to help them achieve this.   Achievement in the sixth form is very good.

We want you to have as much information as possible about the school.  If you would like to know anything about Vermuyden School , please contact Mrs S Cook who is responsibile for primary school links and managing the transition from primary to secondary school.  You could also talk to the four Heads of House: Mrs L Bean (Air), Mrs L Howard (Earth), Mrs C Trathan (Fire) and Mrs A Davidson (Water).

DEPARTMENTS

At Vermuyden we are proud of the range of subjects that we offer to our students, we are able to do this thanks to the hard work of the Department Heads, the Curriculum Team and all the hard working teachers we have.
Follow the link to learn more about the departments and to see outline Schemes of Work so you are able to help your children be the best they can. Below are links to the BBC bitesize revision webpages. These are a great aid for preparation for both KS3 SATS in Year 9 and External GCSE Examinations in Years 10 and 11.

SIXTH FORM

Boothferry Sixth is a friendly local Sixth Form that offers a wide range of courses to suit all abilities. It is based on two sites at Vermuyden and Howden School, with a bus running between them. Students can study subjects at GCSE level (level 2 courses) or A Level courses (level 3 courses) or a combination of both.

Student Facilities include a study area. An extensive university reference library is also available containing up to date University prospectuses. A common room is available for use during free lessons with comfortable settees, food and drink making facilities and a pool table.

Students receive a connexions reward card and may also qualify for Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) of up to Ł30 per week. We are very successful at helping you improve. All students are given target grades based on performace at GCSE level. Independent analysis shows that our students do better than expected.

WE ADD VALUE. IN 2005 WE WERE RATED EXCELLENT FOR VALUE ADDED

(using an independent analysis called ALPS)

In 2006 our average points score was above the national and local authority average (DFES)

We believe this is based on: Effective Teaching - Small Classes - Quality Care
