About our School...
The Royal High Primary School is a non-denominational school which is located in the East of the city and serves the community of Northfield. The associated secondary school is Portobello High School.
The classical style, symmetrical building dates back to 1931 and is built around an inner courtyard or “quad”. The quad provides an attractive garden environment for study and recreation purposes. The single storey building to the front accommodates the reception and administration areas, assembly and dining halls form the sides of the building. The two storey teaching block to the rear comprises 14 classrooms, a library/ICT suite, a Support for Learning Base and two General Purpose areas.
Prior to 1973 the school was the preparatory department of The Royal High School of Edinburgh and provided education for boys only, on a selective basis. Consequently some of the traditions of the past continue to be upheld. For example, the original school song, Schola Regia, is still sung in Latin, and the four Nations school house system is retained: the Scots, the Picts, the Britons and the Angles.
The school is very proud to be a Green Flag school, committed to promoting health and the environment. We have recently been awarded stage 2 of the ‘Health Promoting Schools’ scheme.
MISSION STATEMENT
We aim to work together as a whole school staff, in partnership with parents, children and the wider community, to provide an education which will enable children to acquire the skills attitudes and self-esteem necessary to achieve their full potential – educationally socially and emotionally.
