About Us

Image of Nursery Christchurch Primary School consists of a three-storey Victorian building, the Park Building (which includes the Nursery) and accommodation within the Dane Centre.  The main building is surrounded by playground on three sides and includes a designated Early Years area.  We are currently in the process of developing and upgrading the facilities in the playground.

General Aims

We see the time spent in school as providing opportunities and experi­ences for your children so that, everyone can become well-balanced, confident and useful members of society. 

Aims for everyone are to:

  • enjoy school and feel valued members of the school community

  • recognise, respect and value the cultural, racial and sexual differences in our society

  • respect our shared environment

  • develop the ability to face challenges and solve problems with confidence

Aims for children are to:

  • develop lively enquiring minds and the ability to question and discuss issues rationally

  • understand and value the world in which they live

  • appreciate human achievements and aspirations

  • value their own successes and achievements

  • learn to develop self discipline, self reliance and self esteem

  • use their initiative to set and achieve personal challenging targets in all areas

  • develop social skills and to ensure they can live, work and play together in harmony

These school aims are taken into account when preparing our schemes of work and our detailed objectives.

School Day

School begins at 8.40 a.m.
School ends at 3.15 p.m. for Reception, and Years 1 & 2  and 3.20 p.m. for Years 3 to 6.

The day is divided into two sessions:

Therefore lunchtimes are:

There is a fifteen minute break in the morning and a twenty minute Assembly each day.

The playground gates are opened at 8.15 a.m., 11.55 a.m. and 3.00 p.m.  During the rest of the day, for your child’s security, they are kept locked and entry to the school is via the door in Christchurch Road.  Please ring the bell and report to the receptionist who will be pleased to assist you.
Children should be in the playground by 8.35 a.m. but must not arrive before 8.30 a.m. Children going home at lunch time should not return until 5 minutes before their afternoon session begins.  Children should be collected promptly at the end of school.

Please make sure your child gets to school on time.  It is upsetting for a child to be late, it is disturbing for the class and your child may miss opportunities for understanding and learning.  Children arriving after 8.50 a.m. when the registers are closed will be marked in as late.  Parents of children who are persistently late will receive a letter reminding them of the school times and, if lateness still continues, they will be asked to discuss the matter with the Headteacher.  If there is still no improvement, the Educational Welfare Officer will do a home visit.

If for any reason you are likely to be delayed in collecting your child from school, please telephone to let us know, so that we may reassure him/her.  Please also be sure to let us know if someone other than yourself is collecting your child.  We would not allow him/her to go with someone not known to us.  Parents are requested to tell their children always to come back to the office if they cannot see someone to meet them outside.

At the end of school parents may wait for the children in the playground, but we ask that the areas near the doors are kept clear for the children.  Parents are very welcome to come into the playground to bring and meet their children.  At the beginning and end of each day the children are taken in and out of school by their teachers.  There is a shelter for use by parents in wet weather.  If it is raining heavily before school, children may come into the hall where they have assembly after 8.30 to wait with their parent/carer.


This site is intended to give you some information about the school and about some of the work we do.  It cannot tell you everything, and we hope you will visit the school, ask questions and form your own impressions!

We are always ready to listen to your ideas, your suggestions and your concerns.  All of us at Christchurch Primary School hope that your child will be happy during his/her time here.  We shall certainly do our best to make his/her school days as enjoyable and as prof­itable as possible.  Should there be any problem, at home or at school, which you think may be unsettling your child, please let the Head Teacher, or the class teacher know, so that we can take this into account.

There are various ways you can become involved in school life if you wish:

  • Keep in touch with events by reading the newsletter which is sent out monthly, or on this website.
  • Come to the open evenings in order to discuss your child’s progress with the class teacher and see the work done by your child
  • Become involved in activities in school, such as voluntary support in a class, educational visits and the Christchurch Friends Association. Your child’s teacher will request help for particular events, but regular help is always welcome too.

    We welcome your help and your support. Only by working together in trust and in friendship can we hope to allow your child to make the most of the opportunities provided. 



    Reception age children whose 5th birthday falls between September 2006 and April 2007 will be admitted to school at the beginning of the Autumn Term, i.e. in September 2006. However, children whose 5th birthday falls between May and August 2007 will be admitted to school in January 2007.  Please note:  in line with the Authority’s admission policy, a place in our nursery does not automatically guarantee a place for your child in our reception year.  Admissions to school are dealt with in the Autumn Term.

    Before your child can be admitted you must produce your child’s birth certificate or passport and proof of residency, and also fill in an ‘Application for Preferred School Form’.  These are legal requirements.

    You will be asked to fill in an admission form in which we require certain necessary details, including an emergency telephone number, your Doctor’s name, and any medical condition from which your child suffers: asthma, epilepsy, allergies etc.  We would also like to know any dietary requirements.
    The information you give will help us to ensure that your and your child’s needs are met.  For that reason, we would ask that you inform us of any change in circumstances such as a change of address, new emergency telephone number, or even occasional family upsets: family bereavement, Mum or Dad in hospital, a car accident etc.  We can watch for possible reactions and be ready to comfort your child if he/she brings up the subject.


    Parents who wish to visit the school are asked to telephone or write, so that a time can be arranged which is mutually convenient.  Parents and children are invited to visit the reception class before they start school.

    Our classes are organised in mixed ability groups usually according to age, and children normally remain in the same class for a year.  At Key Stage 1 much of the teaching in school is done on an individual or small group basis in order to accommodate the widely differing abilities and stages of development of the children within a class, but class teaching is not neglected as it contributes to the community spirit of the class and school.  We do, however, set for Maths and English from Year 2 onwards for 3/2 days a week respectively, and for 4/5 days in Years 5 and 6.
    Provision is made for additional help to be given to individual chil­dren where this is considered to be beneficial.
    From Year 3 onwards children are allocated to a ‘House’, i.e. Christchurch, Balfour, Melbourne or Wellesley, and are given a colour badge accordingly.
