Infants School and Nursery

"A happy school where all can enjoy learning"

The school was inspected by Ofsted in 2006. The report states; "Hazelmere Infant School and Nursery is an effective school with some excellent features. An outstanding strength is in the care, support and guidance offered to all pupils. Pupils are very well supported in their learning and their progress is tracked carefully from the Nursery onwards. They really like coming to school and take part in lessons with enthusiasm, showing great enjoyment in what they are doing". The full 2006 and 2000 Ofsted reports are available via these links.

Our school, built in 1964, is located in Colchester, Essex, UK. It has accommodation for Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children aged three to seven years. The building is spaciously designed with corridors leading to six large self contained classrooms, library and food technology area, a purpose built Nursery and a well equipped IT suite. There is a large Assembly/Dining hall which is also equipped for physical education, a kitchen and adjacent playing areas. A Neighbourhood Nursery and Children's Centre also share the same site.

The school works to achieve excellence in all aspects of school life and has received a number of awards in recognition of its achievements. The Letter from the Head Teacher to the parents outlines the school's ethos. The aims and objectives of the school focus on ensuring our children the best possible start in life. The school profile can be found on School Profile and details can also be found about the School Day, home cooked school meals, the Staff and the Governors.

We would be grateful if you could spare 10 minutes and share in our Traffic Census. We hope you will find this a useful resource for your geography teaching.

To achieve the mission statement we:

  • Sustain a caring, friendly and supportive environment.
  • Promote excellence in teaching and learning.
  • Believe that together children, parents, school and community can succeed.
  • Promote lifelong learning within our learning School day and community.

At Hazelmere Infants School and nursery every learner is entitled to an experience of learning which is rich and varied, enjoyable and challenging and inspires all to strive for excellence so that everyone, for the benefit of us all, is able to shape our destinies and create a better future.

Aims of the school:

  • We have high expectations and are committed to continuous improvement.
  • We want everyone to enjoy being a member of this community and feel a personal commitment to it. We are all responsible for making life at Hazelmere Infants a stimulating and rewarding experience.
  • We aim to give all our pupils a sense of individual worth. We help each child to develop initiative and self-confidence, a positive image and a caring attitude towards others.

To achieve our aims we:

  • Encourage children to become confident and competent learners.
  • Provide challenging and purposeful contexts for learning.
  • Support each child to achieve the highest standard of which he or she is capable, through a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • Encourage children to be active participants, learning with and from each other as well as individually.
  • Provide a safe and caring environment and promote healthy living.
  • Encourage everyone to have respect for one another and for the world in which we live.
  • Provide equal opportunities to everyone. We provide equal access to a broad and relevant curriculum. We will not accept any form of discrimination or racist behaviour on the basis of colour, sex, culture or ethnic origin, disability or impairment.
  • Maintain close links with parents and the local community.

Each child has a minimum of 21 hours actual teaching time per week. At the start of the morning and afternoon sessions children wait on the playground, meet their friends and get ready for school.

Please ensure that your child does not arrive before 8.50 am as teachers will be busy preparing work and will not be able to take responsibility for children before then.

There is no supervision available after 3.15.

School Term dates are available from school at the beginning of each academic year from the School Office.
