Welcome

Heathcote School is a very successful and inclusive school.  We offer a firm foundation for life with small classes and individual attention, making it possible to explore and develop every child's potential.

I believe that education is about preparing and equipping young people for life, not just for school.  With this philosophy as our inspiration, Heathcote School provides a stimulating environment where children enjoy learning and are encouraged and challenged to perform to the best of their ability in all areas of our extensive curriculum.

With children encouraged to set their own high standards, performance levels at Heathcote School are often outstanding in both academic and vocational areas.  With no measure of success being considered too small to celebrate, our highly committed and caring staff will always convey this message to our children.

High standards are expected of the children both in and outside the school and we encourage virtues of courtesy, honesty and kindness in all that we do.

In a structured environment where children feel comfortable and happy in their surroundings, they gain a range of experiences both in and outside the classroom, learning to accept responsibility, developing self-confidence and establishing self-discipline.

Our school enjoys a lively and thriving Pre-School department based upon Montessori and proven traditional methods of teaching.  Throughout the school individual special needs are given expert attention with assessments and programmes of study being constantly reviewed and revised by experienced and qualified staff.

The school achieves outstanding success in the Essex Selection Procedure (11+ and our sports achievements frequently reach national levels.  Music and Drama are also encouraged and well supported with the school producing first class productions.

Visitors are welcome to come and experience the purposeful, happy and well-disciplined atmosphere that pervades our school.

The Twilight Club

From September, Heathcote School will be offering after-school care from 3.30pm - 6pm at The Twilight Club and all children from KG to Y6 may attend.  Full details can be obtained from the school office.

PRE SCHOOL

Within the school grounds is the Pre-School Department.  Children may attend Pre-school from the age of two and a half and the number of sessions attended throughout the week is entirely flexible, depending on the maturity and confidence of the child and the parents' timetable and requirements.

Children may join Pre-school at any time throughout the year.

Our teaching draws heavily upon the proven principles of Maria Montessori although other teaching methods are used where it is beneficial to do so.

Pre-school is a great environment in which to learn through fun and play and also to interact and share.  Children progress from learning colours, the alphabet and basic puzzles to writing their names and then copying words and drawing a picture to match.  The children are closely encouraged through all levels of their development, whether they are doing cookery, working on the computer, with the sand or learning to ride a tricycle.  These are very important years for growth development both mentally and physically, and a detailed report of each child's progress goes home to parents every term.

The children learn through a mixture of creative play and informal teaching methods.  The children are, of necessity, taught individually and reading is encouraged and developed at a pace suited to each child.  The syllabus is carefully structured to extend and develop each child and to prepare them for the Kindergarten class.  Group and social bonds formed at this time usually remain throughout their time in the school.

Heathcote Pre-School classes are reserved exclusively for children who, in due course, will take places in the main school.

PRE-PREP SCHOOL

From Pre-School, children move into the Pre-Prep School.

Written reports on the children's progress in Pre-School, Kindergarten and Form I are given at the end of each term.  Additionally Parents are encouraged to visit the classroom to see the children's work for themselves.

Children begin to learn French from the age of 4.  This continues through the school and in their latter years, the children get the chance to go on a school trip to France to try out their language skills.

We have three playgrounds so the children get to play with other pupils of similar ages.  The older children are allowed footballs and larger skipping ropes in their playground.

PREP SCHOOL

Children move into the Prep School in Year 3.

Children are taught the core subjects by individual teachers who specialise in each of the subjects.  They also go on school trips and participate in external workshop visits to the school to enhance the class work covered.  We aim to keep class sizes below 20 where possible.

The 11+ examination is taken during the course of Form 6 and specific preparation for this examination is undertaken during the school week beginning in Year 3.  Saturday workshops are run for extra practice prior to the 11+ exam.

School examinations are held twice yearly in December and June.  The mid-year examinations are in the core subjects only (English, Maths and Science).  The end of year examinations are in all subjects.  The staff will also give course unit tests, at suitable times in the syllabus, which allow them to evaluate the children's knowledge and retention of completed topics.

Children in Form II and above have two reports, one at Spring half term and one in July.  In the middle term the examinations and Open Evening ensure that Parents are aware of their children's progress.

The school has a number of Open Evenings each year where Parents are invited to come to the school to discuss their children's progress.  One of the Open Evenings is held just after the mid-year examinations and the children's results will form part of the discussions.

A 'house' system operates throughout the school and pupils work hard to gain House points for academic achievement and behaviour, and Sports points for participation and achievement in sporting activities.  Houses compete for the award of the House Trophy at the end of each term and the Sports Trophy at the end of the school year.  All pupils have the chance to win trophies and shields in all areas of school life - from sports and academia to drama, music, art, first aid and many more.  Trophies are presented on Sports Day, a traditional event held in July which includes sporting events for all the children, the awards ceremony, followed by afternoon tea..

UNIFORM

School uniform is an important part of the ethos of Heathcote School.  We are proud of our children and want people to easily identify the school that they attend.  Our school uniform is designed to be smart, comfortable and practical.

Our uniform supplier is the National Schoolwear Centre, 12 Parkway Chelmsford and a full list of uniform requirements can be obtained from the school office.
