The school's mission is to produce confident, happy and knowledgeable pupils, well-equipped to make the most of all their opportunities.

ADMISSIONS

The school’s Approved Admission number is 45 for the Reception Year, and this will be the number of intended admissions for the year commencing September 2004 until August 2005.

NEW ENTRANTS

The school will admit children to one of the reception classes in the year in which their fifth birthday falls, without reference to ability or aptitude. Those children whose birthday falls on or between 1 September and the last day of February will be admitted in September. Those children whose birthday falls on or between 1 March and 31 August will be admitted in January.

Parents who wish their children to attend for morning sessions only for the first half of the first term are asked to contact the Headteacher. Parents who wish to delay the admission of their child until later in their reception year may apply to the Admissions Committee to do so.

Procedure - new entrants

Complete an application form available from the school office, a copy of which will be returned as confirmation of receipt.  The closing date for those applicants is 31 March 2005.
The parent/guardian will be contacted at least once prior to the application being reviewed to ensure that the applicant still requires a place.
the Admissions Committee will consider applications once a year, in April, for the subsequent year's reception class pupils.
Offer letters will be sent to all successful applicants.  If circumstances change and you do not intend to take up the place that has been offered, please let the school office know as soon as possible.

All offers of places are subject to acceptance of the offer being received by the school in writing by the closing date stated.
The school must be kept informed of any changes in circumstances, such as change of address or contact number.
If either of these conditions is not met the offer of a place will be deemed to have been withdrawn and the child will be removed from the list of applicants seeking admission.

Letters will be sent to all unsuccessful applicants, offering them a place on the waiting list.

When applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied, in the order set out below, to decide which children to admit:

  1. Children who, at the time of consideration, can prove that they reside in the priority admission
    area which comprises the political wards of St Bartholomew and Holland Haven (a map of this
    area is available at the school);
  2. Children who have brothers or sisters currently attending the school;
  3. Children who have special reasons for admittance, such as medical reasons (supporting evidence
    such as a doctor’s certificate will be required);
  4. Proximity of the child’s home to the school, with those living nearest having higher priority.
    Distance from home to school will be measured "as the crow flies" on a map.

APPLICANTS ALREADY IN EDUCATION

The Admissions Committee will meet half-termly to consider any late applications and application for year groups other than new entrants.   Any new applications and the current waiting list will be considered together, at these meetings. Any child not admitted will be placed on the waiting list where they will be ranked in the appropriate year group according to the same criteria as apply to new applicants.

Procedure - Applications already in education

Complete an application form, and copy of which will be returned as confirmation of receipt.
If your child's year group is below the Approved Admissions Number then a place can be offered.
If your child's year group has reached the Approved Admissions Number or is over, then the application will be put before the Admissions Committee at its next meeting, unless your child is not due to start within the above timescales.
Offer letters will be sent to all successful applicants.

All offers of places in any year group are limited to the academic year to which the offer is made.
All offers of places are subject to acceptance of the offer being received by the school in writing within 15 school days of the acceptance being received by the school.

The school will establish arrangements for appeals against non-admissions, which are independent. Details of admissions and appeals arrangements are available from the Clerk to the Governors on request; however, applicants should note that the Government’s policy to limit class sizes in Key Stage 1 classes have restricted the grounds on which appeals can succeed.

UNIFORM

School Uniform

The school colours are red, white and grey, but the school does allow black trousers, skirts or shorts instead of grey if the parent cannot find grey.

No other colours are allowed.

Denims or jeans are not allowed.

There must be no large lettering or logos on sweatshirts.

Dark coloured, sensible shoes must be worn in school.

PE Kit

PE kit must be in the school colours for shirt and shorts.  The school PE top and red shorts are ideal.  Tracksuits may be of any colour.  Tights must be removed for PE.

For indoor PE bare feet are recommended in accordance with the Essex County policy, although plimsolls may be worn.  For outdoor games, pupils must have a spare pair of plimsolls or trainers.

If PE kit is forgotten there may be some spare clean kit available.  If PE kit is forgotten more than twice in a half-term period a note will be sent home to parents asking them to ensure that this does not happen again.

Jewellery

No jewellery is allowed except for small stud-type sleeper earrings.  These must be removed at home on days when pupils have PE, or covered by tape before the lesson in accordance with the school’s Health and Safety Policy.  New earrings do not need to be removed: they will be covered by tape.  If pupils do wear jewellery, this will be removed and placed in a safe box for collection at the end of the day.

Nail varnish or cosmetics of any kind are not allowed.

Watches may be brought into school at the parents’ discretion, but the school takes no responsibility for them.
