Meadgate Primary School

Meadgate is a Primary School for boys and girls aged 4 to 11 years. We deliver a well-researched curriculum with experienced staff trained to a high level. In addition to gaining language, mathematical, scientific and technological skills, your child will build confidence, develop self-reliance, learn to make decisions and develop the ability to articulate feelings and ideas. We also attach great importance to the development of children's social skills and seek to enable them to build relationships with other children and adults.

Meadgate Primary School building was opened in 1965 to serve the Meadgate area of Great Baddow. The number of children increased so rapidly that, in autumn 1967, the infants were moved into a new building with the juniors staying in the original building. Today most of the school is situated in the original primary school building, as the infant and junior schools amalgamated again in 1983. The School, situated in pleasant surroundings, has a large playing field, and grassed areas adjacent to the playground and classrooms. The accommodation consists of eight individual classrooms in the two storey building, with use of the three rear classrooms in the adjacent ex-Infant building. There is a large Assembly Hall, Computer Suite and Music Room. Adjoining the school is a large, indoor, heated swimming pool where the children are fortunate to be able to have weekly swimming lessons throughout their time at Meadgate. There is a natural wildlife area, pond and a garden. The School benefits from a well-resourced library for use by all the children.

On beginning their education at Meadgate, children become part of a friendly, co-operative environment, where there is an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Each child is made to feel that they have a vitally important role to play in the life of the school. Achievements, no matter how small, are recognised and acknowledged.

Meadgate school is a community school in which behaviour is based on mutual respect and consideration for others. At Meadgate we encourage everyone to uphold the three Meadgate School Rights which are:

The right to be safe.
The right to respect.
The right to learn.

Meadgate Primary School is part of a wider community and parents, friends and visitors are always welcome. Similarly, children are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities provided by the school and local organisation's.

CURRICULUM

The Governing Body Curriculum Policy statement takes account of the requirements of the National Curriculum and embodies the Local Education Authority's Curriculum Statement.

All state schools in England and Wales follow the National Curriculum. Detailed guidelines are set out to ensure that every child has access to a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Religious Education, Physical Education, Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.

Each key stage follows a rolling programme of topics. These topics, which normally cover a term, incorporate the programmes of study from the National Curriculum and, where possible, the local environment and interests of the children. This allows the children to access the content at a higher level. The emphasis throughout the curriculum is on working with meaning and understanding.

Single subject teaching also takes place, especially in English ( the Literacy hour ), Mathematics ( the daily Mathematics lesson taken from the Numeracy Strategy ), Science, Music, Religious Education and Physical Education.

The school has detailed curriculum documentation for all subjects, There are designated Governors for Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Personal, Social and Health education ( PSHE ). We have daily guided reading time, when the teacher reads with a group of children, and children make use of the library.
