On behalf of the Governing Body, staff and children, I would like to welcome you to SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Primary School. If your child is to join us soon, we hope that this will be the beginning of a very happy time for you and your child. We look forward to meeting you many times in the course of your child's career at the school. We welcome visitors and are very happy to show prospective parents around the school and answer any questions you might have.

The school aims to provide a secure and happy environment for your child. It seeks to be a community which compliments the home and the parish in attempting to live out the values of the Gospel and our Catholic faith. We work to ensure that children who attend SS Peter and Paul's Catholic Primary School receive both a balanced and thorough education, one which encourages all children to work to their full potential.

Mr J Johnson, Headteacher

SS Peter and Paul's is a two form entry Catholic Primary School which caters for boys and girls who are practising Roman Catholics, whose parents live in the parishes of SS Peter and Paul's and SS Mary and Erconwald's.

An all age school was built by Canon Palmer in 1903 in the High Road. A separate Infants School was established in 1932. The Senior Department in 1961 moved to form the nucleus of Canon Palmer RC Comprehensive School.

In 1985 the existing Infant and Junior Schools amalgamated and moved to a purpose built semi open plan building to become SS Peter and Paul's Primary School.

There are 15 classrooms, 2 halls (one specifically used for dining purposes, the other one for assemblies and PE) a playing field, library and two courtyards. School meals are cooked on the premises. The children have an excellent choice of food.

SS Peter and Paul's is first and foremost a place of learning. Great emphasis is placed upon creating a caring, happy environment, which is calm and ordered, and therefore conducive to hard work and achievement.

MISSION STATEMENT

We show our love for God in the way we treat each other.

We grow together in a loving and caring community with Christ at the heart of our faith.

We celebrate the many gifts and talents of all our pupils and staff.

We strive to nurture a life commitment to the love of learning.

We believe in enriching and inspiring each individual to fulfil his or her role within the community.

CURRICULUM

At SS Peter and Paul's Primary School, we aim to provide curriculum content that will engage, stimulate and challenge all children. Children of all abilities and aptitudes will be taught and encouraged to develop to their full potential.
The Governing Body seeks to provide a safe, disciplined, well resourced, pleasant and stimulating environment for the children to learn. It seeks to promote a collaborative approach among staff and creates opportunities for staff professional development, which will enhance the teaching and learning of the curriculum, offered by the school to its pupils.

The National Curriculum is organised on the basis of key stages. The three key stages for the primary schools are:
Foundation Stage (4-5 year olds) Reception Year
Key Stage 1 (5-7 year olds)
Year 1 and Year 2
Key Stage 2 (7-11 year olds) Year 3-6

The following subjects are taught in Key stages 1 and 2:

English, Mathematics, Science, Design and technology, Information and communication technology, History, Geography, Art and design, Music, Physical education and Religious education.

NURSERY

Children in the Nursery and Reception follow the Curriculum for Foundation Stage which focuses on the six early learning goals in the following areas:

1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
2. Communication, Language and Literacy
3. Mathematical Development
4. Knowledge and Understanding of The World
5. Physical Development
6. Creative Development

In a safe, secure and stimulating environment young children are encouraged to become happy confident learners.
They develop essential early years skills through active, relevant and purposeful play during the foundation stage (Nursery/Reception).

Our aim is to continue the all round development which you have helped your children attain, and to prepare them for the larger world of the primary school.

Preparing your child for nursery

At our nursery we expect a high standard of behaviour. All children are asked to show respect to parents, staff and each other.
Parents are asked to assist us by ensuring that:
all clothes are labelled (use capitals only for beginning letters)
We would expect that all children attending the nursery are able to:
make the sign of the cross
dress and undress themselves and hang up coats
use the toilet properly, flush and wash hands
recognise their own name
tidy up toys after use
look after books and equipment and handle them carefully
notice things around them and ask questions
have an awareness of colours, drawing, and doing simple writing patterns
have an awareness of shapes and numbers
have an awareness of simple counting and reciting nursery rhymes

CLUBS

A range of after school activities are available for all the juniors. This year the children can join the following clubs: Fooball club, Netball club, Needlework club, ICT club, Performance club, Badminton club and Choir. Through participation in after school activities, we aim to develop the children's various skills, as well as their cooperation and social interaction.
